PROBLEM AT WORK - PEOPLE PUTTING AIR CONDITIONING ON

Hi everyone, ive a problem. work in small team of 3 and we have an AC unit in the room. Even though this is Winter and near freezing temp outside the other 2 colleagues always put the AC on. The problem is not only that it is cold to put on the AC but it is in such a position that the cold air is constantly hitting me. They can't feel the cold directly and they are aware of this as this has been going on for a year.

i wanted to know what my rights are as im sure this is not fair.
I have put up with it for a year and am just fed up of it. I will speak with my manager about it, but want to know if anyone can give advise. as ive talked to colleagues countless number of times and seem to go round in circles

    PLEASE ADVISE, THANKS

Go to you HR department if all else fails had a similar problem, and my friend told me i had the right to work in an environment that was comfortable to me, they sorted it where i work by giving individuals their own fans and knocking the air con off in sections.

Speak to your manager first & see what he says, but tell him that you will not be fobbed off as you have been for the last year.

You could also suggest to your colleagues that you all move round the office so that one of them sits 'in the firing line' of the AC unit.

If all else fails, wear a coat, hat, scarf & gloves in the office - after a few days of this something will be sorted!

Move desk, or swap with one of those who likes the cold.

You should not feel a draft from an aircon unit in the first place, if you cant resolve the issue try asking for an engineer to look at it.

Put a thermometer on your desk - if it's under 16c then its against health and safety regulations - tell your manager that. It'll get sorted.

    edit.

    this might help

Thanks everyone, first need to get a thermometer. I have mentioned moving desk a number of times but they wont budge. I've stood next to them both when the AC is on and they cant even feel its on!!

I've arranged a chat with my manager today so I'll see what he says, thing is when he comes to the office once a week he cant feel the AC where he sits either so I've a feeling I wont get anywhere and may have to speak with HR.

I have the opposite problem they keep putting the heaters on and closing windows in my office so its like a sauna.

At least you can put a jumper or something on, I can't exactly strip off and fan isn't much use as it just pushes the hot stale air at me

Depends how you see it, because last thing I want to be doin is putting layers on that is not comfortable either. I've asked them to keep windows open if they find it too cold, they didnt so once I opened it myself and couple days later it was closed, because they are near the windows. Just pis**** me off and I want something done about it. hopefully wil when I speak with the manager, but not holding my breath especially as the other 2 have been working here for 10 years and 30 years.... and ive been here for a year!

Yea theres nothing worse than working in an uncomfortable environment. I always feel exhausted because the heat makes me feel sleepy.

    GL getting it sorted

Wonder what you work as and where, and how long would you tolerate it before you actaully do something about it. A year I would say is more than enough!?

Thats like saying your should never say your hungry cos there are starving people.

If you work in an office you are supposed to have a comfortable environment. A lot of the people working in sub zero conditions get paid accordingly and they know what sort of conditions they will have to endure when they sign up for the job

do folks miss entirely the meaning of :whistling: ?

Anyway to the OP - go to both your H&S person (assuming the company has one) and the HR or whatever equivalent you've got. Might help if you can point to cold, flu or other artificial air related illness rates in the office too.

Set fire to your work mates desks and take in some potatoes.

It's the same thing with a bus window

Do you have a setting on the AC to divert the air? On our AC I simply but the "swing" to higher up so it doesn't hit me in the face.

I work outdoors, though I sit in an office doing paper work, have my meal break and warm up before going out again. For years the other guys would leave the front door open letting all the heat out wound me up, I took away the door stop problem solved I suggest you remove the fuse or something from A/C.

Ha yeah, try milking cows at 5.30am when its -6 and you cant feel your fingers, like me. Thats cold!

I can see wheres the OP's coming from though, I work in an office during the week and it would p**s me off if I were cold and they kept putting AC on blowing in my face.

Welll the ceiling is so high that you could have 2 rooms, one top of another and the AC is mounted on the celing so very impossible for me to get to. I've had all sorts of ideas of trying to break it, hide the remote etc. but it would just be too obvious it was me.
I try to put it on swing but al that does is swings the air at me every few secs rather than constantly and once switched off and back on, goes back to how it was!!

Throw the remotes in water and then dry them slowly under the hand dryer in toilets :whistling: or get some old batteries you have at home and put them in instead.

Do people still milk cows by hand!?!?!?!?

I still think the best bet is to switch location with one of the persons who likes the aircon on.

How hard can that be? get the manager to arange it when you meet.

I can't see why the others would object to swaping desks unless they think there is a draft problem.

All well and good, but I have the opposite problem! I walk 3 miles into work and then get hit with some idiot switching the AC up to 29 and having to put up with sub saharan temperatures where I cant take any clothes off without losing my job!

There is a lower limit, there should be an upper limit too!

    Thought it was 30.

A year you say eh? That's 12 months too long, Ergo - quit being such a pushover, confront your work demons vis-a-vis with belligerence. Concordantly, resulting in your verk colleagues respecting your authoritah.
