Problems connecting desktop to internet or sharing internet from laptop

Sorry for all the threads today, basically my desktop internal wireless card is too weak to use my neighbours internet(and he is letting me use it before anyone starts!) so I use my laptop which gets a really strong signal, I also have a Belkin gaming adaptor which picks up the network and is connected via ethernet.

I dont know if its the cables or the desktop, tried 2 cables though not sure if crossover or ethernet and when connected to the laptop they work fine for networking but wont let me share the laptops connection, though one time it did work that is what is confusing but I needed the cable for my xbox to ftp to and so took it out of desktop then when I put it back it didnt work for internet sharing.

I then tried an older cable I used when in halls to connect to the uni network and was provided by uni that worked fine, but not now.

I also tried both cables on the Belkin adaptor and the adaptor is connected to the internet but wont send the internet signal to my desktop just lets me connect to my laptop and neighbours laptop.

I used to use the Belkin adaptor at my old house but with a different ethernet cable and it worked fine so I may have to go through my boxes to find it but dont want to do that as it will take ages!

    Any other ideas?

So, in short, you want to connect both of your computers to the interweb via this one wireless connection, yeah? I *think* this should work:

    1) On the laptop, bridge your ethernet and wireless network devices
    2) Assign an IP address to the Bridge device that works with the wireless network
    3) Check you've still got interweb access via the laptop
    4) Connect the desktop to the laptop via a single ethernet cable. Crossover or patch is irrelevant assuming you've got gigabit ethernet connections and Cat5e or Cat6 cablees
    5) Assign an IP address to the desktop. For the gateway, try putting the router's address in. Failing that, put the laptop's IP address.

Oh, and before doing that, scrap any of that ICS rubbish or whatever else you've set up.

Well I'd rather just use my gaming adaptor on the desktop instead of having it connected to laptop thus saving electricity, I checked the ip address of the gaming adaptor and it says its connected to the router so its not that, and considering windows asked me if it was a home, public or work network it recognised something.

I did refresh it once and get a internet connection for a split second.

It may just be a duff board since its a new mobo I recently bought.

Tried yet another cable and it still wont connect laptop to desktop straight or desktop to gaming adaptor, just cant understand how I can access the wireless router network and not the internet.

Either that or its just Windows again as had loads of issues with reinstalling Windows.

I don't think it's Windows, more just the way it's configured, especially if it's trying to configure itself. Do you have much experience with setting up networks?

In the past I have normally got things working first try or after a few goes.

Like the gaming adaptor I have used at 4 different houses and all worked as soon as I configured it, and when I connect laptop and desktop I normally get internet right away.

Will give the cable I know works with the adaptor one last attempt to connect desktop to laptop and see if it shares connection if that works I know its just cable.

It could be signal though or a router fault since my neighbour couldnt get his notebook working earlier even in same room about 6 feet from router it had a 1 bar signal and my signal has gotten worse too and I cant access router admin stuff.

Hey just tried bridging connections and they work first time, not tried the gaming adaptor yet though.
