    Problems with car

    Can someone tell me how long a head gasket is good for in a car. I have had to get recovery out because my car wouldn't start. The man said it is not the battery, it was firing on three cylinders and thought it could be the head gasket. I had this done just over four years ago. Could it be the same problem again.. Or could it be just the spark plugs if I'm lucky! My car is a Vauxhall Estate 1997.

    if the head gasket has gone there will be oil everywhere

    Always check plugs and leads first as these are the main culprits for not starting,Check the oil for a creamy scum on top which is a sign of water in the oil ( head gasket )

    Has it overheated recently?
    Check the dipstick, if it has traces of white stuff on it, its oil mixed with water and is more probably the head gasket that is away.

    change your plugs, the AA always like to say your haed has gone when they dont know whats wrong

    no there wouldnt, there would be water in the oil, check your dip stick for white sludge and your oil cap, if there is white sludge its your head

    There is No white gunk in the oil top associated with short drives. There was a lot of smoke which he said was water had got in but after a while the smoke went. Would the head gasket go after four years. There is no oil on the floor btw. No it has not overheated ever.

    Blown head gasket seldom leads to external oil leaks and usually just ends up with water leaking into the oil and the cylinder pressure leaking into the cooling system,A blown head gasket is usually caused by poor mating surfaces and if this isnt sorted when the gasket is fixed then the gasket can blow again at any time,some cars ( Fiat Puntos ) are renowned for head gasket leaks,

    If there is no gunk and no overheating it is unlikely to be head gasket,Try plugs and leads,

    Hopefully not the head gasket as I thought they would last more than 4 years. It is now at the garage and will await the good/bad news in the morning.

    I have had three rovers - all of them had the head go on them while I had them..
    Signs are - heaters in car will not go hot...
    temp gauge will rise...
    then - white smoke from exhaust.
    white scum on oil cap..

    had this one done last year and no probs - cost £250.00

    Car had done 40.000 miles when it went.

    You'd know there was a fault with the head gasket before you need to call the AA out (overheating etc). If it ain't starting it could be plugs, battery or alternator.

    Mechanic said definetly not the battery or alternator my guess is the plugs want changing. I did have a problem a few weeks ago and had kangaroo juice when driving not so far. But after advice on here I sprayed WD40 and the problem was solved until now.

    Actually my hubby did say something about gold... I figured he was joking. Maybe he just spent lots of cash and blamed it on the car lol

    could also be distributor cap

    What about the coil packs?

    could be the waffle sprocket or the foo foo valve!!
    ps don't you just love pub mechanics!!!

    Hi folks car was taken to garage to be checked. It started fine misfired a couple of times but the mechanic couldn't find anything wrong. Must have been having one of those days. Hopefully I won't have the same again. Thanks to all and rep given.

    Having had the car for such a long time and it has been well looked after I would rather keep it until it is no longer feasable to keep it going. It has always gone throught its MOT without costing anything but general things like tyres, exhaust wipers nothing major has been done. The car doesn't owe me anything. I will be looking to see what happens with this grant of 2,000 for older cars to be taken off the road with great interest.

    Interesting as the heavy duty battery is now 4 and a half years old. The battery has been checked more than once but they all say the battery is fine. What is the average life of a battery btw
