it all depends on your budget. how much are you willing to spend?

If your looking at Canon DSLR then you will find the XXD range such as the new 60D (V.nice V.expensive) to fit your requirements. This range has a fast fps which is required for sports.

I have just picked up a 40D for £400 brand new off flea bay and am really pleased with it.

I would say anything between 40D-60D obviously budget depending would suit you nicely.

Remember that glass is an important addition, there is no point spending thousands on a body if your gonna strap low quality optics to it so keep that in mind when choosing how much to spend on a body.

I can't really comment on Nikon stuff as have never been a fan and have always been Canon.
