PS3 60gb has YLOD, help please!

Basically I turned on the ol' PS3 this afternoon to play GTAIV and as soon as I loaded up a game to play The machine turned itself off. I turned it off at the switch at the back, then back on again and I got the dreaded YLOD. I rang Sony and because I bought the console in May 2007 the cost will be £129. Is this the best thing to do, or perhaps sell the console on eBay?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. And before any 360 fanboys tell me to get a 360 I already have one.

sell it, bin it, or pay an outrageous price to fix what was their fault in the first place..

    Yeah

personally I love my 60gb so I would be very tempted to get it fixed as its the king of ps3's! I love mine so much and after all the bad press on watchdog I decided to let my 60gb retire to the bedroom as a blu ray/dvd player (and the odd game) so it gets to live as long as possible and bought myself the new 250gb ps3 which im going to use as a work horse in the living room lol!

but thats me im a bit obsessed with gaming, being sensible, sell it on ebay you will still get about £100 even broken as its the 60gb, then add the £130 they were going to charge you you have enough for a new ps3 slim 120gb (or add another £20 on top and get 250gb better option:thumbsup:) with a new guarantee!

Also may be worth ringing them back and having a good moan, my brothers 60gb blu ray drive failed after 2 years he explained he spends £50 - £100 a month on games and felt he deserved to be treated better as a loyal sony customer and they fixed it for free!

    all the best jake

While they will break more often than a PS3, i have to agree, at least MS replace for 3 years..

Read up on the Sale of goods Act, visit the CAB of consumer direct, get a case number, and then approach Gamestation to tell them that you expected it to last longer than just over 2 years after paying £300+
    for it.

They will state a load of incorrect bumph, but hold your corner.
At worst, you will have to take them to the small claims court which will cost them more than its worth.

Or bend over and take it.

LOL, that's it, there is your solution.

When you get a new one, in fear of that YLOD'ing too, just choose not to use it...:w00t:

I dont choose not to use it, its still gonna be used just not all the time, it means i have a ps3 upscaling dvd and blu ray player in the bedroom:p! and the perfect excuse to the mrs to buy a new slim lol  i mean what was the point in having an hd tv in the bedroom without an hd source;-)

    This maybe an option

Hey dude this is the article i used to fix my ps3, i would only reccomend doing it if you have nothing to lose ( i.e your out of warranty)

    boardsus.playstation.com/pla…440

When i did mine i wrapped it in a hoody, howver i think it worked better by just heating it without it being wrapped in anything, Dont hold the hairdryer to close as you will melt the plastic....
Keep the heat also moving at all times so you dont burn it, mine took around 3 attempts, and it gets very very hot so dont worry to much about the heat given off, Also when you have heated it let it cool down by a window for at least 20-30 mins then try it to see if it works

    Good luck buddy
    Hope you get yours fixed

were are you .its not hard to fix ylod i have done it but as sony will charge you £129 for the fix they also only give you 3 months warrenty with the fix and then want more cash but they dont tell you that up front do they.so its worth doing the fix yourself or geting someone to do it for you .if not sell it here if it comes with leads and a controller and the hard drive should be worth £60-£80 del.this is the guide i used and is spot on follow it to the dot and you will not go wrong youtube.com/wat…cBo

All credit to Gamestation for that. They don't have to do things that easily.

Thanks mate didn't even realise it was a year old lol!

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but this popped up on Google during my research...

I just have a question regarding this process - I am quite familiar with SOGA but am confusing myself a little bit now. I brought my PS3 60gb from Gamestation in 2007, which then suffered a faulty HDD in 2008 and was replaced by Sony with a reconditioned unit.

It has now, in 2011 suffered the YLOD. Given that Sony have since replaced the machine, does my contract with Gamestation still stand or would any recourse now have to be take through Sony themselves, as the supplier of my current machine?

    Many thanks,
    Sam

Your contract remains with the retailer that supplied your PS3.
Whether you'd get any joy in the courts for a 4 year old console is low in my opinion, but worth a try.

Funny, my phat 40gb got YLOD whilst playing gta4 as well! I was more concerned about my 30hrs of gameplay lost rather than the ps3!
Just get a new slim mate and sell the broken one for about £40 on ebay or something.

For those that do have YLOD and don't mind disassembling - a heatgun and some thermal paste does the trick. There's some decent tutorials on youtube for this.
