PS3 Blu ray drive has died.... any ideas?

Found 21st Dec 2009
As title says.

Was watching Take That 'The Circus Live' on Blu ray through PS3, when it froze half way through and then stopped.
PS3 no longer recognises Blu Ray discs.... Boo hoo,

Any ideas of either a solution or a cheap repair?

Have you let it cool down for a few hours? cleaned the vents, say with a hoover?

Yep, switched the whole thing off overnight, cleaned etc...

What's that?

Another option you could try is getting a Blu-Ray lens cleaner, which will clean any dust off the lens.

Go to System Settings Backup, and store your saved data to an external device, and then to Restore PS3 which will put your PS3 back to its original factory settings. then update the PS3 to the latest FW.

Is it spinning just won't read, then its probably the laser. Quite a common problem. What model number is it? It starts CECH.

will pass that info on, thanks.

A mate of mine had same problem, 2 months out of warranty.

He rang Sony UK and explained, they sent a courier next day and exchanged it for a new one, no problems at all.

Worth a try i would say, just dont tamper with it until you have spoke to them and be nice and polite and i think youll have a chance.

You could try the 'Fan Test' Mode which blows dust out of your PS3.

You could also try the Blu-Ray Reset function.

All are described under 'Super Secrets' here :

I will pass this info on, sounds like he has tried most of the above anyhow, but rep to you for help.

You would need to check the model as early 80gb ones used the same laser setup as the 60gb and later ones changed to the style used in the 160gb model.

Yeah my friend formatted his and it worked...

say you purchased it 8 months ago and it was a present. They should replace it if its not registered.

Might be worth a try but if its an old 80gb one (4 USB's) then you have no chance as they stopped making them in Aug 08.
