    PS3 Custom Firmware Arrives

First CFW for PS3 arrives courtesy of KaKaRoTo, one of the PS3 Developers who have all been working hard on this over the last few days.

You can run the tools to create your CFW and it will install on the PS3 without having to "mod" the ps3 in any way.

The first CFW simply just adds the "Install Package Files" option allowing you to install signed package files such as FTP Browser, however, the developers of homebrew apps have to sign their applications using the real keys.

Check out the first post for links to videos, and screenshots.

If you are already on 3.55, you can install this and it will work just fine.

The following video shows what it is, although it is from an older beta CFW, the one here is made with the final tools from KaKaRoTo

Been following closely but can't access usual sites from work, anyone able to break down or c&p the details here please.

Window wide open now to endless possibilities for PS3 homebrew / Hacking !

I've actually been following closely aswell, and it doesn't seem worth installing it yet, still a lot of work to do.
Also there will undoubtedly be various bugs and that, and kakaroto himself has said work is still needed with various fixes.
You can't run any back up managers yet either as the syscalls need to be patched, the jailbreak previously did this.
There aren't any 'signed' apps/homebrew yet anyway.

But hey, its a start and could really lead somewhere interesting.

I think that the problem with the signed applications is they require some sort of DRM. Geohot had been looking into this if i remember correctly from the chats in #ps3dev. But maybe wait and see how it turns out.

From a week ago at 27C3 to now, its moved at a hell of a pace.

The fact that the PSP keys can be found inside the PS3 as well is mental. Im sure those in the PSP scene will be chasing that and you might actually see some work being done for that console allowing those on 6.35 to get homebrew running without having to constantly using the new HEN everytime they reboot their PSP's.

im on 3.41 and running gaia and open, what benefits would this have?

    What does it look like?

None at the moment. This more of a Proof of Concept showing that it can be done and any changes made in CFW, can be securely signed and the PS3 accepts them believing that it is a signed package that came directly from Sony.

The keys were leaked over the last few days for every firmware for every stage that the PS3's security lies in.

Pretty much the same as normal 3.55 but just adds the one extra of "Install Package Files".

Usually, those on 3.41 in jailbreak mode have this by default as it is a debug option and from there people could install ftp browsers, backup managers, but these all (maybe only the backup managers?) relied on the jailbreak changing something in lv2. This change in lv2 has not been implemented as of yet into these CFW.

This CFW is only a few hours old. There is still many hours and weeks to go before real change is seen, but its a fantastic Proof of Concept showing that the firmware can be unpacked, modified, then put back together.

Are issues still there with regards to blu-ray playback on jb'ed consoles?

yeah i've heard the Geohot is working on a signing application aswell,

the speed at which this is moving is just insane though, but people just need to be careful still as it is all still very new and the devs are learning.

its crazy about the PSP keys aswell, Sony must be kicking themselves.

there was if downgrading from 3.50 to 3.41 with a console with a 256mb NAND (older fat consoles), but i believe off the top of my head there may be a solution now

Never assume it's safe to go online with a modified console though I imagine it is currently safe until Sony clamp down. If they had any sense they'd follow the Microsoft banning model.

    Thank you.

I've already made a thread, which covers all the many things that are going to emerge over the coming weeks...
