PS3 hard drive upgrade & warranty...

If I buy a bigger hdd for our ps3, I have to keep the 120gb that´s in there now
in case the console breaks down, right?

Correct. If you swap it out for a bigger one, keep the 120GB to return to them, as you may not get yours back.

    It doesn't void your warrenty.

Thanks. So it's better to wait til a year is over I guess as I'd wanna sell the 120gb.
I know it doesn't void the warranty as Sony support upgrading

I had a friend exchange a ps3 with a replaced hard drive (dropped it down concrete steps) and you don't complicate the return with mentioning the hard drive. You just remove any hard drive you installed and sent it in and they send it back with no hard drive. Is that helpful?

You could sell it, and the just buy another 120GB if you needed to from Ebay.

Your PS3 is covered for more than a year by the S.O.G.A, so after a year, you can still get recompense.

I just gave them a call and they say they´d definitely need all the original hardware back meaning I´d have to keep the hdd, no exceptions

    That´s true
It´s just that a 320gb only costs about 39 pounds and I can easily flog the 120gb for around 30 to 35.
Guess if it had to send it in I´d have to buy the exact same hdd model that was in the console?

If it's direct to Sony, they wouldn't know, because they swap the console at your front door.

    To me, it's a no-brainer. Sell the 120GB now, get the 320GB.

You would have no problem picking up a 120GB form here, or on Ebay if the need arose.

I guess I go off to amazon then. Is this one good?

Oh and..is there any way to transfer stuff back to the pc?
I mean I transfer it on to the ps3 hdd through sharing with WMP11.
But I only can transfer it back using an external hdd plugged in the ps3 via USB?

    That one seems fine.

I got one that came in an enclosure, so that I could put my old PS3 HD in it, and then use it as a 60GB external USB drive.

I don't know what WMP11 is, sorry. I transferred my stuff off with a USB drive, put the new drive in, formatted it, and then transferred it back again via USB.

    Windows Media Player 11 ;-)

I got the exact same 320GB HDD in my PS3, it's been fine - that's a great price from Amazon, I paid nearly £10 more before last Xmas for it.

Have you got an original style PS3 or a new slimline one?

    Got a slim one
Yeah I too thought it´s a great price.
    Will order in a few

iv not got a PS3 yet but been wondering the same thing. Iv got a question n maybe some one can answer it.

Wont sony record the serial numbers of hard drives in there machines? Whats stopping some one putting a faulty hard drive in to a PS3 & sending it back to sony wont they know the hard drive was not the orignal in the machine either tho its the same size

Ah ok, not sure if it still applies with the slim model as I've not got my hands on one yet, but on the old style PS3 you had to watch out when removing the screws from the existing HDD enclosure - as if you didn't have the exact screw driver needed for the job the heads on the screws strip very easily. I found 2 of the 4 screws particularly troublesome.

I had to use needle nose pliers on them in the end, just to get them turning - have a pair handy!

From what I´ve seen it´s got the same blue butter soft screw ;-)
Do you know what kind and size the screwdriver has to be?

There's nothing to stop someone putting a faulty drive in, as explained earlier, they don't even check that there is one in there when they come to collect it.

I never had any problems, but I have a full set of screwdrivers. It's the smallest one of my electrical screwdrivers. Not much help, granted.

I'm not sure about the size - I had a large woolies socket/screwdriver set, and I was sure once I'd identified the one to use that I'd found one that would have no problems. I was wrong, the main problem was getting them started, once slightly loosened they all came out easily. Bear in mind I only had problems with 2 of the 4 or 5 you have to mess with.

Fyi, I personally had 38GB stored on my on my PS3, this took an hour and 20 mins each way back and forth to my USB hard drive. So make sure you do it when you have other things to do and not just sitting around waiting for it to happen.

I´ll check ebay for screwdrivers...We do have a set of tiny ones though, so might check those first.
Yeah I transfered about 30GB of stuff the other day. Annoyingly slow...
