Ps3 - upgrade hard drive on 3.41 40gb phat model

    My ps3 is running 3.41

If I put a new hard drive in, will it automatically look for the latest update online? Or will it look for the current one online? Or will it not need to look for the update because it is already stored elsewhere?

Did a quick google and it came up with an entirely different problem, namely:

    --
As a 30-page strong thread on the official PlayStation forums reveals, folks upgrading their hard drive have been getting a “no applicable data” error after trying to install the update, which has left them with a non-working PS3 and, in some cases, a corrupted original drive. According to CVG, the issue may have something to do with a newly discovered feature of the 3.41 update that allows for more incremental patches, which might also explain why the problem only seems to be affecting PS3s where the firmware is stored in on the hard drive instead of the system’s memory.

Sony has not made any official statements regarding this one. Any of yall updated without experiencing any problems like this? Im kind of hesitant to update right now since im using a USB storage method, even though I’m not upgrading my hard drive.

Which isn't really what I wanted to hear. Keeping it at 40gb right now until I hear it's safe

From the google it seems like 3.41 and later are stored on the hard drive itself, which kind of ties in with an argument on here the other day where fanpages was saying you could pick which version of the firmware you installed when installing a new drive

Will having 3.41 on a dongle stick help me at all?

Stored on the nand? Can't you disable any network activity on the PS3 before upgrading the HDD in that way it will try not to connect to the internet?

    EDIT
here's 3.41 in rar format. use winrar from rarlabs to extract.

Mate, I have literally just done what you are attempting. I have a 40gb FAT ps3 with 3.41. I simply fitted anew 640gb HDD and then when I booted up it gives you the option to 'format'.. do that- it took me about 3-mins and then rebooted. Now all good. Im still on 3.41 FW and have the additional space ready for me to jailbreak!

Thanks - got a 320gb ready to go but waiting for decent CFW and media player, until then I will use it externally. Just wanted to trouble shoot the problem before the event, not after lol.

Also toying with the idea of geting a larger one such as your 640gb or maybe a 500gb, we will see.........would 7200 speed be a better option? Also, do I need any special tools ie small screwdriver or anything? Also my 320gb drive is in a usb enclosure, how do I remove? Just dissasemble? Can't find the bloody thing to have a good look at it but its a iomega 2.5" like the linky

It's a bargain for that price and probbaly deserves a hukd thread on it's own!
Regarding 7200, Ive read that 5400 is the best to go for, something about the 7200 being noisier or something like that!

I just used a small phillips screwdriver!

I thought they would create too much heat, but one on HUKD only used .05% more energy, so that shouldn't generate too much extra heat. Will have to check out the noise thing, thanks for the tip

You can simply remove the HDD from the enclosure.
It will have two small screws on the back near the mini USB port.

Then remove the back cover, and pull the drive out the front.

Remove the drive from the tray of the enclosure by removing the 4 screws that is holding it, and unplug from the connector.

Thanks Saint!! Now for the hard part (finding the bloody thing!!)

Its a long shot but I am hoping it will cure the blu ray drive / DVD drive too - running the restore menu it said my hard drive was corrupted (but it plays avis and PSN games fine so dubious about this). The guy I bought it off said it had took a knock and there is a dent in the corner near the power button and eject button.
