PS3/Bluray films, picture quality overhyped or is it my tv?

Bought Blackhawk Down from one of the guys from here, stuck it on me PS3 and had a look and tbh i can't see the difference! Now ive had to put the PS through my (crappy) Hitachi 1080p 37" tv instead of my 1080i 32" Sammy so i don't know if the Hitach is letting me down on the visuals.

What settings are you guys using on the PS itself?

My old man has the Sky HD box and the only channel on there that really looks good is that extreme sports channel Rush HD, the rest just look meh!

In all im yet to see a massive difference in piccy quality than a normal dvd player (yes i know there is some improvement in picture quality to some extent), im just posting to get a feel on what settings people have and what their view is on the whole HD malarky

Hope you understand this babble of a post cos ive got a hangover of doom! cheers ;/

The thing is that the ps3 does a fantastic upscaling job so I see where you are coming from. Just got dark knight BR and have to say I have never seen a better picture anywhere (50" LG 50PC55).

Get your PS3 to do a re-scan of auto output setting. It might be set to 720P

Thx cs m8 yeah ive checked the output and it's set to 1080p.

Im not at all happy with the Hitachi's limited picture settings on the menu, tbh im getting shot of it in feb and buying a 42" Sammy.

What about the difference between plasma/LCD then? i see that LG you have is a plasma, when i read up on the 2 i plumped for the LCD but how has plasma come along since the burn issues?

I bought a Panasonic Plasma back in October and without appearing to be bias the picture is head and shoulders above an LCD. Mind you, you pay for this quality, but I have to say I am very impressed, both watching in SD and HD (Blu Ray via PS3). I bought a better quality HDMI cable - (£15) and again this makes a slight difference to the quality, but not much. Sport and fast moving images are better on a Plasma too. Batman DK is just superb on PS3, so too is Transformers - these are the 2 movies I use to demonstrate the PS3 and Plasma. Most people are blown away. Hope you are able to get your settings sorted.

Oh should also have said that there are no problems with burn issues now - this was a problem a few years ago, but now completely fine. Panasonic are also offering a 5 year guarantee on most of their Plasmas just now.

plasma wins by a mile for me (i have both types and LCD is just poor imho).

Cheers chaps for the info!

black hawk down is probably not the best film for HD as it is filmed in a grainy raw way, but something like Batman Dark Knight looks awsome, especially on a plasme as you really do need the blacks (not the greys of an LCD)

I've not seen Black Hawk Down although reading reviews of it there do seem to some poor quality areas, the intro (as mentioned above) is very grainy and there are many parts of the film tweaked for a stylistic approach.

I don't think it's anything to do with settings as even on my older 720 32in TV there's a very noticeable difference between SD DVDs and high definition material. The films I find benefit most from the HD treatment are darker films, on an upscaled DVD the shadowy dark areas are soft and grainy when upscaled whereas with HD material they are very dark and sharp. Films suc has V for Vendetta and the new Batman films shows this very well although other recent films such as Wall-e and Ironman which have such clean distinct lines when compared to the DVD versions.

I've been watching Firefly recently and the picture feels like it has a layer of grime on top of it due to the softness and noticeable grain particularly in the underexposed areas.

To get acess to the service menu to try and tweak a few things in there, go to menu and press 4725. (Thats the code for my Hitachi anyway, I presume its the same for most makes of Hitachi)
