PSU Advice Needed To Run ATI 4870

Recieved new Radeon 4870 this morning. But a bit worried present PSU might be inadequate. I have a Coolermaster extreme power 460w psu.

Can it cope with the 4870?

You would be pushing it a bit .It may run the card but could put stress on other components as you will need to use a molex to 6 pin adaptor and depending on which rail this uses you could be taking power from the Hard drive or the MOBO and could possibly lead to failure, I would look out for a good 600w PSU with 2 6pin connectors,

i second what tonyg1962 has said. May run but under load may fail

The PSU has a 6pin gpu plug so no adaptor required.
I'm only a casual gamer, and dont overclock etc.
Would that make my life any easier. Can't really afford to change psu. would it be safer changing for a 4850?

dont think a 4850 will do very much in terms of load consumtion. it will near enough be the same. I think you can get a psu for about 25 quid now for a 600Watt. With a 480 is one of them gambles you see. Depens how much your system sucks

    Quite possibly then.
Haven't actually opened the box, incase I need to sennd back.
I'm reluctant to change the psu, the price of £25 quaoted for a psu will be a bog standrd noisy beast compared to the silent one i have.
Any idea what's the best card suitable for this psu would be?

Yeah the 4850 only has 1 6pin and uses about 30w less so would be a better option and is about the maximum i would use with that PSU, If you are desperate to try it you could give it a go but i would make sure your hard drive is backed up,

I meant if you are deperate to try the hd4870,
The 4850 would probably be OK and certainly better than the 4870 if you really dont want to buy a new PSU,

Thanks for the advice, gonna send the 4870 back, I'm not ready to jump so high yet : (

600W? Sheesh. 460W is plenty for a 4870, assuming the reast of the system is modest.

The 4870 uses around 130W in load. Add 100W for the CPU, 20W for an HDD, 20W for a motherboard, 20W for the memory, 20W for the optical drive and 20W for all the fans and that's 330W, plenty of spare power.

sounds about right, plus the cm is a quality little psu so wouldn't worry too much unless you plan o add xfire and several raid arrays
