    PVR - Sky Digital

    Hi,

I'd appreciate some advise on PVRs, and in particular in relation to using it to watch / pause / record Sky TV.

I've looked at Humax's, but their product management confirmed it's not possible to view an external source via the box (e.g through Scart etc).

I really don't want to give my money to Sky for Sky+, especially as they try to force you into taking multiroom. :pirate:

What I guess I'm therefore looking for, is a PVR with a decent HDD, and the ability to take Scart or similar input, rather than just using it's own Freeview tuner.

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

Thanks magician, just to confirm - I don't need any kind of subscription etc to use the Tivo with Sky do I?
    Cheers, S

No subscription for Tivo use. But you won't be able to watch one sky channel and record another sky channel as you could on Sky+.

For anyone just on Freeview or top up TV i can recommend the Humax 9200T.

I have one, it's the bees knees

Do you not realise the whole point of a PVR is that you never watch live TV, so why do you need 2 tuners?
If need be , you can be recording sky at the same time as watching terrestrial....

Ah, very usful if you want to record two programs that 'air' at the same or overlap and your not around to watch one of them there and then

so just record the +1 hour version..............:)

I too want to get PVR but I cant get Digital terrestrial in this area so I have to get sky. Is there any boxes that will capture the DVB-S stream without reencoding first. I don't want to go the sky+ route as I don't want the extra channels and extra costs involved.

    GET A TIVO:)

Surely any DVD recorder with HDD and Q Link would work (my Panasonic DMR-EH50 accepts the sky personal planner recording function)

what im really after is one that does not re encode

Can you then move any recordings you have on the TIVO onto a DVD Recorder??

    Cheers

Reaps - thanks for the different angle - can you give us a low down on what us novices would need to create a system, and what we would get from one?

    Thanks
