QUestion about first cars??

Found 7th Jul 2009
I passed my driving test (i cheated i did it in an automatic) last thursday. My parents called from holiday and said theyd buy us a car so we didnt go looking for a car a the weekend cos they were away. Then monday comes and my dad says he'l look at the weekend. But now he says he's gonna take his time about it. even asked if my parnters parents would help toward it. (cheeky, they have given us 120pounds towrads our home improovents and not helped once his parents have done 50%of the work and even paid for our extension to be built plus 3grand on my other halfs train ticket this year). anyway we obvioulsy cant be bothered with all thi swaiting and jumping through hoops and being eternaliy grateful to them for spending 500pound on a car for us. (oh btw they have a 6month old dodge EACH and go on holiday abroud minimum of three times a year) so its not that they dont have the money. ok i kinda went of track there.

my question is pretty simple, how long did everyone else wait after passing their test before having access to a car??

oh and am i just being a spoilt brat or am i right to feel like theyve messsed me around??

if you buy your own car you dont owe anything to anyone.. simples:thumbsup: andthere are zillions of cars about so get the right one at the right price for you not a lemon

ditch your parents and make your partner's parents your own

As for the car; personally I reckon it's better to get one straight away but I waited around 4 months for my first car due to funds.

see i think i sound like im being a spoilt brat but how can you be spoilt if you dont get anything ever. we were going to buy one, this is the problem but my parents convinced my other half not to buy one till we passed (i found out after i passed cos they didnt think i would pass)

and we were happy tobuy one and think we will now

I passed march this year, and drove my fathers car around the place, but now I don't drive.

yeah its very tempting lol. see this is the thing im not a natural driver, i need to keep on top of it. i had a lesson a week, if i missed a lesson the next lesson was half hour of getting used to it again. so ireally worried about not driving for too long and not feeling safe, especially as i have two young kids

were you abused as a child by your parents ?

what exactly do they owe you lol, stop waiting on handouts and work for your material possessions......

I passed in april and got my car in october, It was an early 21st pressie (birthday being the following july) I would save up and get your own, my brother did and hes always said it was so much better because HE got the money for it, HE paid for it....he basically did everything himself and felt like he earned it.

as mentioned above however, I got my 1st car as a birthday pressie....so cant really give my honest opinion...

Passed my test 26 years ago and did it in my own car a little mark one Ford Fiesta call Slug:)

You are sooo lucky with your in laws:roll:
Maybe one of your parents was feeling impulsive and generous and the other one vetoed the offer?
You may even appreciate the car more if bought with your own money anyway. Insurance is the big expense btw.

This is as easy as one two three.

1. Learn how to spell.

That will help for the next stage.

2. Learn to stand on your own two feet and support yourself.

3. Buy your own car.

thanks thats a bit harsh. i do work for what i have got in mylife. i left home at 18 and worked hard for myself to live. my parents do not hand out. my other half works hard for our family to pay the mortgage and bills etc.

i didnt ask my parents for a car, they offered thats what im annoyed about. they put an offer on the table, but then start clawing it back and moving the goal posts.

1spelling is a problem i cannot fix, i am smart, high iq etc but just cannot spell, no matter how hard i try. and it is far from relevant.
2. i do stand on my own two feet,
3. my parents originally offered, we had no intention of getting a car from anyone else we was ready to go and buy one the following day.

perhaps you should learn to read before critisieing my spelling

My mum and dad came up with the following idea: They paid for the driving lessons and i bought myself a car. So i ended up with a lovely mk2 escort that cost me £250. ( as that was all i could afford) that was 15 years ago mind you!
Just Think yourself lucky to have any financial help from either set of parents.

they have given us 120pounds towrads our home improovents and not helped once his parents have done 50%of the work and even paid for our extension to be built plus 3grand on my other halfs train ticket this year.

Do you pay for anything?? Spoilt brat vote here im afraid.

Also where does he get the train to for that price lol?

I would say the best thing would be to buy yourself a cheap automatic car just for you to get slightly more used to driving. You can then get/ask your parents to buy you a nicer car when you feel more comfortable driving on the road.

As for being spoilt I would say no. Just because your parents are giving you something it doesn't mean your spoilt.
Plus since they themselves said they would get you a car you're not spoilt at all in expecting them to get you the car lol. Being spoilt is all about your attitude not how much your parents shower you with gifts.
I don't know you lol so I can be sure but based on this thread I wouldn't say you're spoilt

ok, i guess. let me re word it

i am ****** of with my parents because:

they offered something and then decided to go back on that offer

them offering has put behind my plans of buying our own car

my parents had a cheak to ask if his parents would help when they have helped where they never had and have less money than them anyway.

in summary i wish they just hadnt offered then i wouldnt be ****** off, we would just have a car already

Maybe you should learn to say no rather than just take take take...

(PS... ever heard of Spell Check Miss High IQ?)

I'd say you should just go get one now with your own money. Don't wait for them to um and ah about it, you'll have more satisfaction when you buy it and think to yourself "it's mine."

I plan on buying myself a '98 Polo straight away when I pass in August/September

lol now you sound like you're sulking and I don't mean to laugh

perhaps you could have bought your car without delay and then your parents could have given you a contribution if they so wished,

there was no need to divulge the other info about their cars/holidays etc, which is why you came across as a sulky, indulged child to me...

Oh annual - thought it sounded a lot of money!

I would just go out and buy your own car otherwise you may be waiting for ages!

Maybe it's a mistake to compare two sets of parents here. After all whatever you do after having kids, someone will think you're wrong!
Your partners parents can't really set the standard for yours.
Forget the offer and move on. Maybe an experienced driver could go out with you wshen you do get your car. I think that's always a good idea until you feel more confident;-)

yes ive heard of a spellcheck and yeah i can see the lines showing up all my mistakes, and i cant be arsed with changing all the wors as its a pain when one hand typing

yeah that sounds like two very sound pieces of advice thanks

If I was you I would just give up on this thread. No one is helping you and you are being called a spoilt brat repeatedly.

Just buy yourself a car and expire this thread.

As it happens, i'm only using one hand to type.

My wife is sleeping and i have my week old daughter asleep on my chest.

Just do everything yourself.

Sometimes people offer when they can't really follow through.

If they donate afterwards, all is good.

As you have waited for a free car, you have passed your test and you have no car.

moob;5686859

No that was his parents.

His parents might be eager with the cash just now but when it drys up you might be left high and dry with no-one to turn to, eventually we all need to learn to stand on our own 2 feet.

I think the best way to live is to not accept anything from anyone, I couldn't be arsed being eternally grateful to someone for my extension or have it thrown back in my face if there was to ever be an argument.

If your parents have let you down in the past then you should have known better to think they would help you this time.

yeah fair enough, i probably am sulking. just always get bit fed up with them flashing all their money then saying they got no money to help us with the wedding etc.

i am being a spoilt brat, just minus the spoilt bit. when i was younger my mum had no money at all and i was so proud of her and how she coped, i was almost proud to waer cheap clothes cos i knew my mum wrked hard to get every single thing we owned. i guess i just feel hard done by cos now they have money they dont help, even with the wedding. where all my friends parents been saving since they tiny for these sort of things.

im being a brat, your right.

im going to just go out and get car and forget the offer

Enjoy your driving anyway, and congrats on passing?
