When you cook it any germs will be killed when people wash them the germs end up on worktops ,floors ,towels and taps and then anything else that touches them ,

i used to wash it too till i learned truth ,as for cooking chicken i nuke it sure the out side will be very crispy but near enough impossible to burn the meat below better safe than sorry i say

I never ever wash meat. dont see the point tbh, cooking kills all the germs.

I always wash meat apart from mince (makes it watery) but make sure I clean everywhere thoroughly afterwards. Another reason why I wash meat is that you don't know who/whats been crawling over it before it went into the packaging!

Don't wash it. As others have noted, it spreads bacteria everywhere. Also as most of the germs are on the inside, washing the outside is a futile exercise anyway. Proper cooking will make it safe to eat.

same here,,,,dont think i could eat it knowing its not washed

Is this magic water which kills all germs then?

Food Standards Agency says you shouldn't bother.

I saw a program that said you do not wash meat because of all the contamination it can cause. Not from the meat but your handling of it. You have to pick it up off one surface and then put it near the tap and then put it down. You may use forks etc to help you. Basically this program said that is the reason you dont wash it because in doing so you can be spreading the grems all over the place. If you dont wash it the germs stay on the meat and then are killed off in the oven.

Exactly, running meat under a cold tap isn't going to do anything! :-D

No comments about not washing yer meat before it goes in then

I always wash meat. As it removes all the crap before cooking it. If you cook meat, you would kill the bacteria but still be left with the bacterias remains.
You don't know what happened to the meat before you bought it, it could have been dropped on the floor or anything. and you can't kill dust etc in the cooking process.

And you stuff it dont stuff the bottom end.

stuff by the neck and under the skin

Ive seen so many people stuff the wrong end
and end up with a pink bloody bird

How long does a turkey keep after cooking?

Erm, no you don't wash it, you shouldn't wash any meat.

Unless you are very careful, you are likely to spread any bacteria over your work surfaces, all around your sink, on your taps, on the surrounding area, on your hand towels etc etc...

Besides, what do you actually wash your meat with, and why?
Cold water? That well known, kill all germs & bacteria cold water? or are you using warm water, (and making the bacteria situation even worse?)
Unless you are washing your meat using Domestos (or similar) I really see no point in it at all

washing meat wont get rid of bacteria. Please dont tell me you wash them in hot water :w00t:

you should actually handle the meat as little as possible.

"It’s actually fine from a safety standard to NOT wash the meat. In fact, washing it can spread unnecessary risk around in the form of cross-contamination with your kitchen accessories. The ]Federal Safety Inspection Service says, “There is no need to wash or rinse meat or poultry,” and offers a downloadable brochure with more information, available at by clicking ]here."

slightly off topic, but one of the worst things people do is defrost meat at room temperature. That is a breeding ground for bacteria. Do not do it! Eithere use the fridge, defrost in the mickey, or under running cold water.

I can answer the why. Because the butcher probably dropped it on the floor and I don't like bone fragments/sawdust as a coating:whistling: Gets the blood off as well ie on pigs liver.

Now, do you wash vegetables before you cook them? Why?????
