unless its to a building society. You may also need the account reference number. If it used to be a building society, like halifax, the number usually starts with a letter followed a slash then some numbers.

Its not a nigerian asking you is it?

Related (just). Not strictly a bank transfer, but I opt to pay by cash over the counter at high street banks now primarily to avoid using PayPal, but also because my bank account cannot be maintained online. I also sit in an office where trying to conduct any business over the telephone would be difficult with regards relaying personal details as everybody else could hear my responses to the usual security questions.

    Anyway... to my point...

I always ask for the branch address where the account holder has their account.

In one example this was useful as the seller had sent me their details (for me to make a payment) but had transposed two digits of the sort code around the wrong way. The sort code quoted to me did not exist. As I had the branch address the bank teller looked up the sort code & I could then pay in the money. Without this I would have had to leave the bank, return home, ask the seller to check the details, and then go back to the bank.
