Quick question about car insurance

Hi all

I'm looking to buy a small car for my dad to get around in. I've found a suitable one and was just wondering, if I bought it (i.e. regged it in my name), would I then be able to take out an insurance policy in his name? I assume this would be fine, but just want to make sure.

I also want to add myself as a named driver so I can use it when I visit. So basically the V5 / registration would be in my name, insurance in my dads and I'd be a named driver.

All a'ok?

Thanks!

Alright, thanks. Very glad I asked then, rep added to you both!

I tried to get insurance for my dad about 6 years ago, and they told me that they would only insure the registered keeper of the car!

They usually only insure registered keeper only exception is when car is owned by spouse. It is possible to get insurance like you are looking for but its a specialist risk and gping to be difficult to source. An independant broker may be able to organise for you though.

Its all changed since some years ago, only the registered user can insure the vehicle but you could still add him as a named driver to allow him to drive. That would be okay but you would have to declare that it is kept at another address as well as the registered address.

have just ran a quick quote thru gocompare using my details but saying my dad the owner at diff address and that car would be kept at his address, got loads of quotes no problem, specified that the insurer was not owner but it wasnt a problem, I assume due to familial relation, the option to choose o wner and reg keeper was available to change.
Worth you running a quote thru based on approx car etc and see how it comes out for you. Good luck,

Hmm.. yeah just did a confused.com quote myself and found that I can say the car is registered to me and that my dad will be the policy holder. I guess you can't have some randomer taking out a policy on your car, but as long as they're related / your partner, etc, you're ok??

Confused indeed!
