Quickest way to get a new iPhone 3GS?

I'm not a fanboy. Please read this article, its very true: neowin.net/new…ing (linked in next post)

Anyway, despite not being a fanboy, I'm an iPhone user, and I want a new one. I'm not in any contract, and have my PAC code from Voda coming in the next 2 days.

So does anyone have any experience on the best place to get it.

1) o2 Retail
2) o2 Online
3) o2 Telesales
4) cpw (shudder)

Obviously I want it on release date, and depending on potential queues/shortages, I'd happily queue up outside o2. However I don't want some grubby operative manhandling my shiny iPhone before I get a cover on it. Does this happen, or is it just sign the contract and hand over the box?

------------

ere's my workings for total contract cost by the way:

mins/texts - (monthly price x contract period = total) + phone cost = total cost

18 months:

3GS 16GB

75/125 - (29.38 X 18 = 528.84) + 184.98 = 713.82
600/500 - (34.26 X 18 = 616.68) + 184.98 = 801.66
1200/500 - (44.05 X 18 = 729.90) + 87.11 = 817.01 3000/500 - (73.41 X 18 = 1321.38) + 0 = 1321.38

3GS 32GB

75/125 - (29.38 X 18 = 528.84) + 274.23 = 803.07
600/500 - (34.26 X 18 = 616.68) + 274.23 = 890.91
1200/500 - (44.05 X 18 = 729.90) + 175.19 = 905.09
3000/500 - (73.41 X 18 = 1321.38) + 96.89 = 1418.27

24 Months:

3GS 16GB

600/500 - (34.26 X 24 = 822.24) + 87.11 = 909.35
1200/500 - (44.05 X 24 = 1057.20) + 0 = 1057.20
3000/500 - (73.41 X 24 = 1761.84) + 0 = 1761.84

3GS 32GB

600/500 - (34.26 X 24 = 822.24) + 175.19 = 997.43
1200/500 - (44.05 X 24 = 1057.20) + 96.89 = 1154.09
3000/500 - (73.41 X 24 = 1761.84) + 0 = 1761.84

There seems to be no real reason to go for 24 months which seems odd?

The unlimited text bundle is 132.12 for the 18 months, so add that to whatever figure your interested in if you need it.

are you taking it out on contract? I got mine from apple store in trafford centre, of course that was in 2.0 era, but they were better and less hassel than o2 who wanted to do credit check and everything.

Can you do the home activation on this iPhone? I'd rather buy from an Apple store than O2.

when are they avaliable, dont think its going to be for a while yet isnt it, they only got announced yesterday?

Couldnt tell you, someone who bought a 3G version from the shops will be able to tell you how it works, I dunno how they differentiate between selling PAYG and contracts.

might well be worth seeing what quidco (if any) CPW might be doing, I went through a phase of buying a few unlocking/jailbreaking then selling them on, CPW gave me £100 in cashback per phone.

Original Poster Banned

Yeah I think they changed it for the 3g one, as people were just jailbreaking them. Could be wrong though.

Yes I'm taking out a o2 contract by the way, does this mean I can't buy from apple store then?

just wait outside on release day and mug some1???

CPW doing £45 by the looks of things, o2 dont give quidco on iphones. Really want one. Currently with o2 with renewal due. £45 would cover a months contract at least anyway.

Or just buy the current 16GB 3G for slightly less and still have the same functions (except camera spec).

All other features are software driven and will be available on the 3.0 software

The bold is my best bet I think.

I have an 80gb ipod for in car use (the adaptor doesnt work with iphones/ipod touchs), so i dont really need 32gb, and ive asked around and they both fall in value equally really, so no real point in getting 32gb.

I can see why people are saying just buy the 3G version, thats the schpiel comming out of O2 - I've just verbally knifed some bint who tried telling me that theres no difference in handset just the software, but I could upgrade to a 3G iphone today, but not a 3Gs Iphone until July 27th. To which i replied "why? if theres no difference apart from the firmware which I can download and install next wednesday then why not just give me the newer one?"

It seems they're still trying to shift the 3G with innacurate information to tie people into contracts, I just cancelled my contract outright I'm happy to pay the £70 and get a pac code, ill make that money back when I sell this 2.0 version.

Original Poster Banned

Yeah I had a row with a o2 guy who claimed it wasn't out til July.

3 times I half-shouted "LOOK ON YOUR OWN WEBSITE" before he finally got the message and said he would tell his boss, as he's not got the correct info clearly

I really really dont wanna have to go into the store, but I need mine friday morning before I go work so I might actually have to deal with these morons rather than order online....

plus points: not got too long to wait, I'm on holiday the following week, so can play with it full time and give my 2.0 one to my 2 year old and load it up with music and films for on the plane for her.

negative points: its out same days as transformers 2 so can only play with it during the day (although thats quite possibly a plus point :lol)

available for pre order tomorrow apparently: mirror.co.uk/new…28/

does not specify whether if thats for web order or reserve for store pick up.

Thats odd. I just phoned apple meadowhall to check theres no problem with PAC codes... there isn't. They don't have any plans to open early on the 19th either.

But if o2 are pre-ordering.. maybe I should go there.

Apparently if you buy from apple though, there is no messing about with o2 for warranty issues - the apple store receipt is worth a thousand words apparently!

I wouldnt imagine them to open earlier, they know they are going to sell, so why bother? I might pop into an apple store at weekend, maybe they will have a 3gs display model to play with I'll ask the question there, although they will be selling for £440 minimum becuase you dont sign upto the contract online.

you can take out a o2 contract through apple Same prices.

also, wouldnt pre-order from cpw anyway, but thanks for the link and info

Well i would assume that the Apple Shops will have more stock of the GS, does anyone know if you can downgrade tariff after 9 months on iPhone tariffs? Im interested in £45pm then drop it to £35pm...

afternoon chaps,

what are you doing about phone insurance? if your even bothering with it? the carphone warehouse one is supposed to be awful takes them ages to repair and replace, while o2 is excellent, a couple of days replacement. o2 insurance adds 180 to the price. from experience insurance is a must.... with the ammount of money we are paying u would think it would be included :x

the total cost of a 32gb iphone for 18 months with insurance is putting me off getting it on release.

id like to hear what you guys have to say on the matter

re insurance, i'm not bothering with its covered by my home contents.

re cost...... by the time the price goes down they'll be about 2 months away from releasing a newer model, which you'll want instead, i say get it asap then you might be ready for upgrade as a new one comes out.

hmmm need to check my home contents insurance... may i ask who you are using?

thanks for the quick responce by the way. shame they dont do a 12 month option.... be perfect for the next upgrade in june 2010.

thats precisly the reason they dont do a 12 month one.... if your a gadget frak you have to buy yourself out of the contract for the remaining 6 months while startign a new one with them becuase of the exclusivity, excellent marketing on their part IMO.

I'm with Nationwide.

you can order it from mobiles.co.uk with £60 quidco.

I don't know about preorder, sorry, but have you considered doing the

3GS 32GB, 1200/500 - (44.05 X 18 = 729.90) + 175.19 = 905.09

And then at 9 months (half way through the contract) you are allowed to downgrade to the next tariff. It seems that would be the £34/month option. So you would save £10/month for 9 months (£90) on your calculations, making it £815 or so for the full 18 months and you will end up with a 32GB iphone rather than the 16GB for an extra £2. Thats so long as 600 mins/500 texts is ok for the last 9 months. Anyway, just a thought. Hope you get one on release day.

Might be worth checking your figures..

44.05 X 18 = 792.90, not 729.90

It should read

B]1200/500 - (44.05 X 18 = 792.90) + 87.11 = 880.01[/B]

vibeone;5442031
