# Quickie maths help please - mutually exclusive and independent events?

Sorry I know it may be a bit late for all this LOL!

I have some data I will post below, if anyone could help, please?

I just need to state 2 mutually exclusive events and 2 independent events.

For mutually exclusive I have said male/female and year 1/year 2

But I dont see what I could pick for independent - surely anything i pick would affect a second pick?

Yes, it's to do with probabilty - maths/statistics

Is it male/female and year1/year2 mutually exclusive because you cannot be male and female at the same time and you cannot be in year 1 and year 2 at the same time. And then age/year and age/gender are independent and gender/year, because u can be male or female and in either year 1 or year 2 being male does not effect the year neither does the age. Also your age does not affect your gender.

this one is easy. i will do only btec year 1. basically you hve to look at the most occuring number. btec year 1 is equal to 18. after you find the most occuring number, divide that by the number of people in the stats itself. so 18 divide 17. this gives a number of 1.0588. the second part of the anwser is worked out by finding the biggest diffrence in the set of numbers that one has been presented with. in this case we will, take 30 and 16. 30 is the highest and 16 is the lowest. the diffrence between the 2 will make the biggest diffrence from the whole set of numbers, and that is why 30 and 16 were chosen. this gives 14. the final part is simply and all you do is times the anwser from part one by the anwser of part 2 to give the anwser. 1.0588 times by 14 is 14.82, rounded to the closest whole number gives 15. the anwser is 15.
you can prove the anwser is right becuase it gives the next lowest number to the orignal lowest number in the list, which was 16 to begin with.

We haven't been taught it but from reading online I thought it meant when you choose 1 and then choose a second one, like if you take 1 card from a pack, and then take another :oops:
