Check their contracts .... It is not a statutory holiday therefore if written otherwise you can make them work

it's not a deal but you can ask them to work and give them a paid day off later in the year or just oay them at least time and a half!

Froce people to do things you want at ur own risk......try offering an incentive or you could ask them what it would take to get them to work would be much better than forcing people to work.

I have to work bank holidays,I get an extra 8 hours pay plus a day in lieu to take when I want.

Smacks of bad management, this weekends bank holiday and next weeks wedding have both been on the calender for some time, and yet we get asked to sort out employees and management problems a week before a contract is due.

Encourage them with the ability to have a job as you need to get an order completed without it you'll possibly have no future contracts and this could lead to redundancies due to lack of work.

The Royal Wedding on 29 April has been declared an extra public holiday for this year.

Although many employers have given their staff an extra day off, you don’t have an automatic right to take the Royal Wedding off or to be paid for it if you do. Your entitlement to paid time off for the Royal Wedding will depend on what your contract of employment says.

All full-time workers are entitled by law to 28 days paid holiday a year. Part-time workers are entitled to a pro-rata amount. Provided that you get 28 days paid holiday, your employer can organise your holiday entitlement the way they want and can treat all bank and public holidays as normal working days if they want to.

If you have a written contract of employment you should check to see what it says about holidays.

If your contract says you are entitled to 20 days' annual leave a year 'plus 8 days' bank and public holidays' you are not entitled to a paid day off for the extra day's public holiday. Your employer can still choose to give you a paid day off, but this will be a bonus, not something you are entitled to.

If your contract says you are entitled to 20 days' annual leave 'plus public and bank holidays', without stating how many bank and public holidays, then you have a contractual right to an extra day's paid time off for the Royal Wedding. If your employer refuses to allow you to take this day off or to pay you for it, you should try talking to them about it to see if you can get them to change their mind. You might want to get advice from a trade union or an advice agency to help you do this.

If you don't have a contract of employment or your contract doesn't mention holidays then you only have the right to take off the 28 days - or a pro-rata amount - you are entitled to by law. Your employer would be entitled to take any of the following three options:

•they can give you an extra day's paid holiday as a bonus, or
•they can allow you to take the Royal Wedding bank holiday off as paid holiday but deduct it from your 28 day annual leave entitlement, or
•they can allow you to take the Royal Wedding bank holiday off as unpaid leave and not deduct it from your 28 day annual leave entitlement.
If you don't have a right to take the Royal Wedding off as paid holiday, you can ask your employer if they will agree to treat the day as an additional paid holiday anyway. This might depend on the type of work you do and whether your workplace needs to be staffed on the day. As you don’t have a guaranteed right to the day off you should ask nicely!

No that will be me im here there and everywhere !!!!!

I think this is an issue that many employers need to address just like having different holidays etc for different religions. If you are against the Royal Family you have no need to have the day off especially paid, after all it is an extra day given just for the wedding.

Well in all honesty you or your management should know what's what regarding employment law and next friday, No offence but that day has been in the news for a while now, at least enough time for employers to know the laws regarding the day.

If you feel you can not deal with the situation then you should pass the buck to your management who should be more than capable of sorting something so simple out.

Good luck, and I will enjoy next friday off, paid, as i work for a decent company.

I do well said !!!!!rather be at work than lying on the sofa on a monday morning with no job to go to.

doesn't get paid extra for BH ( except xmas day + NY day ) we work a rosta so if it's your day to work on a BH then tuff titty! you get the 12hr in lieu back to take whenever you want though.
Is on nights for the Wedding so yippeedoo i get to watch it....
