    RAM...

    Bought some new RAM (2x2GB)

Put it into the slots, it only shows up as having 2GB in?

    I have a 64bit OS.

How can i get it to show up as having 4GB?

Desktop or laptop? Some motherboards only support up to 2gb of ram.

if desktop have you tried them in both slots

I got 4Gb because crucial scan reccommended that - so i presumed it would take it

If i try with 1 stick, it'll workj fine in 1 salot but in the other it wont boot? (faulty slot??)

If it was an unused slot previously I have had them where the contacts on the slot have oxidised, putting the ram in and out about 10 times usually cures this.

So both sticks work if they are put in separately? Sounds like a dodgy ram bank then. What old ram did you have in it?

Could be not inserted correcty or if like my motherboard if you have 4 ram slots you have to make sure there in primary slots prior to secondary ones being use otherwise bios won't look at it!

Yes it was previously used. The RAM was the RAM it came with..

    512mb cheap stuff.

    I have 2 slots...

What happens when you put in one of the 2gb with the 512mb ram in slot 2?

have you tried both sticks seperately, in both slots and what happened

In 1 slot it boots up fine and says 2GB.

In the other it will beep and refuse to boot.

What does it show up with the original 2 sticks?

It used to show up as 1GB. but i will try it now

Put the 512mb stick in slot 1 and then the 2gb in slot 2. If it still comes up with 2gb then you cannot put more than 2gb in. However if it comes up with 512mb then the slot 2 bank is faulty.

on the cruical website when it searches should say max ram supported per slot ??/

I put both 512mb sticks in and it shows as only having 512mb RAm, so im guessing slot 2 is knacked! Yet it was working this week, on monday it said i had 1GB of RAM.

    Easy fix?

On the crucial website it said it reccomended 2 x 2GB

have you tried updating your mobo bios?

    Whats your mobo model?

Sounds like you goosed the slot during installation. Possibly static shock. Next time get a man in.

    Rubbish.

Leave it dead for a couple of hours and try again, you may just have a faulty slot, only way you will know is to try both slots with the 2gb, if they both work then the maxiumn memory on crucial for that mobo is wrong.

Bios also could be the problem being out of date.

To find out the motherboard model, i downloaded a program that tells you info about it etc. Came up with this:

So i'm guessing theres no way il ever get 4gb of RAM.

Doesn't look like it does it. I wonder what the returns policy is from crucial in the fact that they told you from their own scan it could take 4gb?

I bought from ebuyer because it was cheaper. But only bought 4GB because crucial told me it could take it.
