RAM compatility query...

I'm aware of the Crucial Memory Finder tool which is great...

What I want to know is this:

When I see a deal for RAM on here, how can I find out if its compatible with my system?

I've used the Crucial tool for my Toshiba laptop, but it only ever chucks up 4 options of varying sizes (512, 1GB, 2GB kit). Surely there must be others available from other retailers?

Sorry if I sound like a bit of a techy noob, but I've never needed to replace components until now...

You need to find out what type and speed of ram your laptops motherboard can handle. You can get 2 different types of ram these days, DDR and DDR2, if your laptop isnt that recent (over a year old) then it will no doubt have DDR memory. Once you find out what type of ram you have you need to find out what speed of ram it can handle as if you install too fast ram then it wont work properly.

Im sure you could find some reviews or specifications for your laptop that you can post on here for use to tell you what speed etc of ram you'll be needing.

D'oh! Might have been useful...

My manual says "a 256/512/1GB DDR2-667/533/400 or 2GB (DDR2-667)" can be installed.

According to the Tosh website specs it's currently got:

512MB DDR2 RAM (533 MHz)

I want to take it up to 2GB, with two 1GB sticks...

There's loads of deals around at the moment, like this hotukdeals.com/dea…del
which would suit me down to the ground.

But I'm wary of buying the wrong thing, and it wrecking my shiny new laptop...

Cheers for any help!

...bumo my own post... sorry...

Can anyone tell me the difference between these two, they appear identical to me:

crucial.com/uk/…304 (this what the crucial memory adviser says I need)

crucial.com/uk/…53E
(but I can get this one from eBuyer for around £40 with GC)

As I say, to me they look identical... please help!

I think they are identical, just one is labelled specifically for Toshiba systems. You should be fine with the ]ebuyer stuff!

Just be sure you are actually buying laptop RAM as its smaller than regular RAM!

The ]Kingston RAM you posted is desktop memory and won't fit a notebook. Whereas the ]Crucial RAM you posted is laptop RAM.

SODIMM ram for a notebook, DIMM ram is used in desktops

Will do. Ordered it at the second attempt.
1st order was cancelled due to 'failing security procedures' (it's the first time I've used GC, so maybe I ballsed something up), but the second order went through just under the wire of the end of the £10 discount...
