RAM Pricing to expensive...

Why is the price of RAM so high today?

I bought a 2GB 200pin DDR2 PC5400 (laptop memory) for about £17 end of last year, that same RAM now seems to be £25 upwards!

Whats the deal?

Does anyone know where it can be found cheap?

It's all bought in from china, taiwan etc, paid using american dollars... The dollar value has decreased so prices have had to rise

think i got that right

There is already a thread on this somewhere.

Its like double the price now, madness

I started a thread about this about a week ago. The general consensus was it was to do with production slowing down due to the emergance of DDR3. Prices are unlikely to go down much now,but if they do BUY BUY BUY lol

Is RAM the new gold?

Only DDR2 apparently. Use your billz and buy a few thousand pounds worth and you will be minted by xmas.

Awesome advice = free

Its because PCworld bought it all up so they can tell all the idiots " Comes with a MASSIVE 4gb of memory"

Thats crazy, I think computers will be using DDR2 for a while yet.

I bought a laptop with 2GB RAM thinking it would be cheap to upgrade, I was wrong.

I didnt mean your crazy mate, I meant the manufacturers are, putting the price up if they think DDR2 isn't going to be as sort after. Thats just daft

It sucks.

I guess it's a combo of rising memory prices, the £/$ rate, OEM's buying it up in preparation for Windows 7 and DDR3 becoming more mainstream.

So does anyone know the cheapest place for it at the moment?

Its much more a case of it being very cheap (underpriced?) about a year ago than overpriced now. Memory has always followed a similar sort of price curve since the day of SIMMs - a particular process will start out very expensive, drop rapidly, bottom out then creep up a bit - exactly the same happened to DDR when DDR2 became mainstream. Remember DDR2 is manufactured in larger process sizes than DDR3 so as fabs upgrade their process lines the production of DDR2 will decrease, pushing the price up. (And of course the $ and other market factors also have an influence...)

It might be worth looking for second hand deals (although its much easier to find 1GB sticks than 2GB sticks second hand...)
