PC is 5 1/2 years old with 1GB RAM (2 x 512MB), running a bit slow so was just wondering is it really worth upgrading the RAM due to the age of the machine, just some advice before purchasing some. XP home so max will be 3GB

i wouldnt bother upgrading it, the pc is probably only worth £30 quid or so lol! Just get a new one?

Your mb might only allow 2gb max, check the crucial scanner to confirm

done that already and the suggested upgrades are 2, 3 & 4GB & i know my XP wont support it, so wondering if it is worth maybes upgrading to 3GB, only reason is a few weeks back i was transferring a 1.5GB film onto my USB 2.0 pen and it took approx 20 mins

Might also be worth considering is it worth doing it, if its a single core processor then it would probably still be slow but if its a dual or quad core then it should be. post some more specs of the machine and we should be able to help a little more

typical attitude, spend £300 to fix a slightly slow comp hmmm.

If the only problem is its a bit slow why not give it a try,you can pick up older memory quite cheap depending on which sort you need.

p4 with xp and 3gb should still be decent for everyday tasks.

If you double your ram you will notice a huge difference

2GB would be plently.

You can run an XP machine with 256mb of ram and less

Dont mind if I just copy and paste what I wrote in another thread, these steps may be worth taking also, they mayhelp with your slowing computer :

few progs worth having and running once in a while, all free of course (Do not purchase full versions)

Malwarebytes
Adaware Free
Spybot search and destroy

Free antivirus (AVG antivirus), sometimes get a bad press but I have used it for years without a problem.

I am also a big fan of a back up and fresh install of windows if you have a disc

i do regular scans so my pc is virus free, have xp back up but done a fresh install about 10 months ago, probably never really noticed it being slow until using a laptop with Windows 7.

and extra gig of ram alone will make a big diffence then

pc2 - 3200u - 333 -10a1
right i undertand that pc2 3200 is the speed and would be no point in getting a higher rated one as that would defeat the purpose but what is the 333 - 10a1

*edit*crucial is recommending DDR2 PC2-5300 and says it can support upto this speed but would that not run at the 3200 speed

How much hard drive space have you this can also cause slow down when transfering data

230 gb total (2 partitions)
C drive 172 gig (87.2 gig free)
