RAM upgrade for my laptop, best price, unsure of of type needed?

I have a HP Compaq Presario C500, It came with 1gig of ram and running vista so I would like to add at least another gig of ram. If anyone could tell me what type of ram I have/need to buy, as I am vaguely aware there are different types. Or alternately tell me how to find out for myself if the info is on my laptop somewhere.
Any recommendations on where to buy or how much to expect to pay would be great. Also how tough is it to fit? I used to build pcs (back in the P2 days) so have some confidence i can do it myself.

Try ]here it will scan your system and tell you.

When you know what you need post it back in here and you will get the cheapest place.

Run "Scan my system" here

You dont have to buy crucial memory, but it will tell you what memory you need.

Most laptops have 2 "slots" so you can only get 2 memory sticks in a laptop.

If your currect 1Gb is made up of 2 x 512Mb strips you will need to buy 2 x 1Gb strips (and take out the 2 x 512Mb strips).

Check your laptop documentation to see if it will take that much memory, some older laptops may not.

Thanks for the replies!
It told me that i have 2 * 512mb sticks and can fit 2 * 1gig sticks maximum which is what i want to do. Its recommended upgrade was 23.48 inc vat (not del afaik) which actually is a little better than i was thinking it would be.

Currently installed memory:

512MBDDR PC2-5200 512MB

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1GB
Available Memory Slots: 0
Number of Banks: 2
Dual Channel Support: No
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2050 @ 1.60GHz Model 14, Stepping 8
CPU Speed: 1600 MHz

Any recommendations on better priced/quality memory (if quality makes a difference) would be great.

Just to clarify a few things for you.

Memory can be DDR, DDR2 or DDR3

You want DDR2 (TWO)

Memory speed can be numbers such as 2700, 4200, 5300, 5400 and so on

You want 4200 (which is also known as 533Mhz)

So, for example, this memory below would fit your laptop. It is 1Gb DDR2 4200 (533Mhz)

(Just showing this as an example)

I have to be honest and say not an expert on laptop memory, but Kingston, Crucial and Corasir are all good makes.

Thanks, its all pretty simple when it's spelled out to me ;-)

What about form factor? I have seen ranges from below and above 200, the one i was reccomended was a 200 200-pin SODIMM, is this the only type that will fit?

Yes, SODIMM is special shorter memory with the chips closer together for confined spaces like laptops and all-in-one PCs, normal desktop memory is longer and won't fit in the same slot.
