Found 3rd Feb 2009
im downloading a rapidshare file, im a premium member but the speed is only 50-60kb/s
I test my speed at speedtest.net at its showing my speed at 4174kb/s.
usually i hit just over 800kb/s.
Any ideas on my problem?

Possibly the file is located on a server with high traffic. Try another and report back on the speed. Its not your ISP speed capping I take it? (I know VM cap speeds after a certain amount of downloads). Also for some reason I find rapget plays up occasionally an I get faster speeds from pasting into my browser directly, you could give that a go.........

Thats right. I dont know how they work it all out etc, but my line is 8128kbps and i can often download at 860kb/s

is there a way to compare the speed each broadband company could give me?

Or will it all be pretty much the same?

its whatever your line supports most likely unless you are on a 2mb plan? your line may support a higher speed. there is a BT tool somewhere but ive long lost the link that will tell you pretty much what speed your line can support.

We've just tested your line and can confirm your line supports the UK's most complete broadband package, BT Total Broadband. We estimate your maximum download speed to be 3.5 Mbps (Megabits per second).

Hmmm - Now how to get that speed!
