All you need is a raspberry-pi, power cable, and sd card. Also you'll probably want a case unless you are happy using a box you already have.

You can buy this SD card usb adapter for £2 if your computer doesn't have an sd slot
    amazon.co.uk/Int…AM/

Simply plug in the sd card, use the raspbmc gui installer i.imgur.com/WaU…png
It'll only take a couple of minutes. Then you eject the sd card and plug it into the raspberry-pi, along with an hdmi cable and the power cable.

I know XBMC is in beta for the devices but I can't see them getting it running even close to my ION HTPC.

Ordered mine a couple of weeks ago, with a 14 week expected wait.

In that time there may be more similar products from other manufacturers, so just have to and and see.

Anybody have a link to the download for raspbmc? The Main site seems to be down so need an alternative.

You could probably get by without a keyboard and mouse if you can SSH or VNC into it from another computer.

And you have lost me, as i say, not a tech head so will probably one of them kits on the modmypi website, its about £35, already bought the case so would only be another £25. just wondering if it would be wise to get wireless than wired.

If I never already had a streamer (WDTV Live Hub) I think I would go for are more elegant solution even if it does only play upto 720p an for 50 quid.

To be honest you don't need to VNC on it other than to make typing easier without having a keyboard at hand. SSH is pretty vital for XBMC though. The software isn't really plug and play long term so you'll need to get to grips with these terms.

Glad I bought a few ATV2's when I had the chance (Jailbroken), and you don't have to wait 6 months for one or even build a lego case

I keep hearing about a £30 super mini computer, but wtf can I buy one now?????????????

It can be as simple as that if everything goes fine with it forever and ever and you never need to tweak anything. I don't know anyone who has managed such a simple set up and is why I recommend stuff like the WDTV live box for family and friends so I don't get stuck in to supporting an XBMC box for them.

Looking to set mine up this week!

I was tempted to get a Raspberry Pi and setup as a media player but was told that due to the limitations of the hardware, it would not be able to play files of all video codecs. I am looking at building my own HTPC or alternatively buying a ZBOX Nano ID82, which will be more meaty to enable game play and other expansion in the future (16gb RAM, SSD etc).

Would love to hear thoughts on Raspberry Pi as it does look like a versatile machine for the price and easy of setup!
