Not quite as amusing as Ray's routine with 'Charles & "Tich". That was both clever & funny in equal amounts.

With Dave Allen, Spike Milligan, Michael Bentine, Spike Milligan, Ronnie Barker, & Peter Sellers already sadly missed, who is your money on next?

Any of the Monty Python team?
Eric Sykes is top of my list; another great loss there too

This aside, Jeff Dunham seems to have cornered the Ventriloquist Dummy market in recent years.

Is there anybody else in this dying art worthy of mention?

Do you remember, Shari Lewis & her "Lamb Chop" puppet?
She also sadly passed away twelve years ago (Ms Lewis, not Ms Chop).

Shari's daughter, Mallory, tried to revive the magic but unfortunately, as we mentioned, it seems to be lost on today's younger audience:

I starting typing "Are you old enough to remember..." & decided to remove it.

Oh well, just me then

Yes, Keith Harris (with "Orville" & "Cuddles") & Roger De Courcey (with "Nookie") are still alive, but you will only find ventriloquists in holiday camps, pantomime appearances, & "end of the pier" shows now; no mainstream TV coverage (except for Jeff Dunham, as I mentioned above).

I sense a Justin Lee Collins "Bring back the Vent" special here...

A darn sight better than it is today. We had talented artists; not manufactured ones.

Sadly the ventriloquist is dead , but the dummy is still alive and kicking although he hasn't been voted back into power !

It is because of Stan Laurel that Lord Charles looked the way he did.

DailyMail.co.uk

The monocled Lord Charles was inspired by a boozy toff whom Alan spotted … The monocled Lord Charles was inspired by a boozy toff whom Alan spotted at a table during a cabaret show. And he later based the puppet's face on Stan Laurel. He once recalled: 'I looked at Stan Laurel's face and I thought 'Good God, that's the face I want - just change the hair and put a monocle on it'.'So I played around with some photographs of Stan and found the face, went to the man (who made his ventriloquist dolls) and showed him what I wanted and he made me Lord Charles.'
