Make a recovery/startup disk. It's in the options somewhere just can't remember where.

Where did you get this PC from? A lot of suppliers will send out recovey disks.

If you re-installed it, would it ask you for a product key, and if it would, is there any way of finding out what it is on the current computer?

Just wondering incase you did, and the op doesn't write it down or have one ;-)

If it is genuine windows the product key should be on a sticker on the PC case.

Its a Compaq, and it has the sticker on the PC case

When I serviced Compaq PC's they came with recovery discs. If you don't have these, contact the supplier and ask for them.

IIRC there where two discs one with the OS and the other with the applications on.

there is a program somewhere that can find your product key for you
not too sure what it is

How about if I download XP home from a torrent site then use my existing Product key to activate it, will that work?

nope if u download from a torrent site u should get a key generator too

the program to get your key back is called magic jellybean. just do a search for magic jellybean windows in google and you should find it.

What a load of rubbish. Why would you use a key generator when you have a legitimate key?

Sorry i assumed you couldnt use a producy key that you already had and used for other software

If you can still access your PC, see if there's a partition or virtual drive - some companies have the recovery disk loaded on to the hard drive, in a separate partition, which saves the need for giving out disks.

If you have the recovery disk on your hard drive there should be a program buried in you start/all programs menu to do the restore for you.

This will definitely work, did it myself a couple of weeks ago - just ensure you get an 'OEM' copy. Your key won't work with any Retail copies.
