I'm looking for a new TV for my parents, they're after about 40 inches also want iplayer and itv player, is it better to have one with them built in, or have something like a now TV box? Any recommendations appreciated, thanks

go for any reasonable make, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Sony. etc rather than cheaper brands as it will probably last a lot longer and have more functions. you should be able to get a good 42"/43" tv for around £350...
look at what ukhd have and buy online via topcash back or quidco as you will get money back.
good luck

The Samsung TVs are great boxes so a smart TV like this one should suit your needs

Would definitely take one with the 5year guarantee my old TV started going wrong after 13 months

Even though a one year guarantee is usually specified certain home electronics are expected to last 5 to 6 years and a claim can still be made against the manufacturer according to consumer laws.

A less expensive alternative here:

Toshiba 40L3453DB 40 Inch Smart WiFi Built In Full HD 1080p LED TV with Freeview HD + 5 Year Guarantee - £259 with code until tomorrow

Look at John Lewis and Tesco Direct as both are giving a free 5 year guarantee. You should get a good deal in the boxing day sales.

Thanks guys, I'll get them to have a look, that Toshiba doesn't have itv though does it? Are the now TV boxes any good, can you use them without a subscription?

The Toshiba is a smart TV - it will have access to ITV player, 4OD, Demand 5 and many other installable channels/apps. Yes ROKU Players, Chromecast and Now TV Boxes can be used without subscription if you get a 'dumb' TV. Obviously you pay a Premium for certain channels/services if you so choose...like Netflix

Now TV player would be fine coupled to a dumb TV (BBC Player etc), with the qualification that it is 720p streaming and somewhat limited in terms of apps available (it's a cut-down/restricted ROKU essentially). Because it is is really a Sky sales platform, you couldn't get Netflix with it, for example

EDIT - See important message from Canary below

Sorry, but this TV does NOT support ITV player, 4OD or Demand 5 and I don't believe it is possible to install any apps onto it.
