Recommend USB extension sockets

I currently have two USB 2.0 ports on my laptop and would like to extend this to 4 USB ports in total as I find that two ports are too little.

Anyone recommend a good value extension socket? I can live with 3 USB ports in total but if I can have 4 or 5 that would be better.

Does it need to be a powered hub for high power consumption devices like USB powered hard drives?

I use this one Usb hub
I like it because each port has its own switch so you can control which ones to have on.

no, just more sockets as i currently need to plug in

printer
scanner
usb memory stick
unifying mouse and keyboard
speakers

so i currently keep taking the cables out and plugging the cable i need in so i would like to have the convenience of not having to do this if possible. not sure if it is even possible to have all 5 devices plugged in at the same time, although not all used at the same time?

i don't often use the speakers so i can leave that one out and just plug that in when needed as that may use high power.

this has USB 3.0 sockets. Can they be powered through a USB 2.0 socket?

thank you. looks good. do you think that if i switched all the sockets on, there would still be enough power from the single USB socket that it is plugged into to power it?

In mine i have the printer, gaming mouse and gaming keyboard all at once and it works fine then when i dont need the printer i switch its button off. If i were you id just buy it and try it, if you dont like it then tell amazon and return it for a full refund.

i don't like returning stuff through online purchase as i can't be arsed. the review stated that if the cable gets any movement then it disconnects, have you had any problem with it this way?

thanks. that is helpful to know.

i am unlikely to be throwing it around but from a few negative reviews, it seem to indicate that you had to have it perfectly still and any sort of movement will disconnect it. would appear that they were possibly exaggerating the issue.

You should get the WiFi dongle for your printer and scanner and this will save u having to constantly plug your scanner and printer in. I brought on of eBay a few years ago for £10 and you just simply plug it in and u can just print through WiFi.

can you post an example link for me? so my printer and plugs into the wifi dongle, then the dongle gets connected to my home network and so my laptop can see these two devices? i am mulling over how this will be an advantage to a USB extension.

Taking the various devices...
printer - that would be mains powered, no significant load
scanner - if mains powered, again insignificant
usb memory stick - standard low, or possibly a double low
unifying mouse and keyboard - standard low
speakers - eek! probably high and also protocol violation (draws power without clearing the increase)

So I'd give the speakers their own port, and then unless anything else is hefty and not mains powered, they should be ok on an unpowered hub

Yes, agree. The speakers will be by far the power drain as it is powered by the usb. They are really great little speakers and certainly blast even though they are powered by the usb. I will only plug them in when i am listening to my music.

I bought a powered usb3 hub from amazon 7 sockets(amazon basics approx 17) and its been pretty good . This was the third one I ordered from amazon. First one lead was 20cm or less, second was for data not charging( they said) this one can power and charge all my devices , including a a WD passport drive
quite small usb
