    recovering data from HDD... :'( :'( :'(

My external HDD dropped, now every time I switch it on, it makes a buzzing noise and doesn't start up.

I tried taking it out of it's enclosure and using other enclosures but no luck ... :'(

Can anyone PLEASE help me *sob sob*

    Sad sad times..... :'(

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    Hey,

Put it in the freezer for a while, at least a day - it will make it "shrink" sightly, allowing the disk to be read but you have to do it very quickly as obviously when it goes back in your machine it will warm up and expand again. Should be enough time for you to copy everything or the important things onto computer/other storage device.

Has worked for me - use to do it all the time when I worked as a system engineer for an software company. Hopefully this will work for you but it isn't gurarenteed.

Edit: just read it was an external HDD, just put it in not the whole enclosure too

Sadly ,if it doesn't start up ,I think you may have lost the data . I had one in for repair 2 years ago , a 500GB external drive that had been dropped by the owner , a photographer .All her photos were on this , the originals , some had been printed off and had been in a gallery . Many were sold . She lost all her work with this drive , which just buzzed when it was powered . real shame when this happens , but you have to be very carefull .I have software for getting data off formatted/deleted drives but thats when they are fully working .A specialist company can get data from the platters ,but it is very , very costly .

As said, physically damaged disk going to cost more than a grand.

try using spinrite to see if you can get it to start up again.

I know what your going through...my son dropped my HDD camcorder and I lost the footage of my daughter after she was born...Never get that back.Wish I could. Now I back everything up!

No real advice, hope you get it works out for you tho

all that porn lost?? sad times indeed.

But, all joking aside, remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up to your pc directly before you attempt things like sticking it in a freezer.

    it's gone.

    unless you're rich

    yo,

there is a cheaper option that you can try.. and it has risks!

get another hard disk, EXACTLY the same model.

    swap the circuit boards

    hope it powers up....

risk, warranty void and chance it might still not power up

It is an external drive, i dont even think OP has tried the drive directly yet, so it might work fine for all we know.

ok, didnt read that, however, dropping the drive inside an enclosure is highly unlikely to have damaged the drives circuit board either..
