Register to vote by 26 November to vote in General Election on December 12 - make sure you have your say

There is very little that affects the pounds in your pocket as much as who is in government - deciding how to tax us, spend that money, and manage the economy.

As you'll know unless you have succesfully dived under a rock every time the news comes on, there is going to be a General Election on 12 December and whatever your political views, there is no greater opportunity to have an impact on how we are governed.

But you need to be registered on the Electoral Roll to do so, and the deadlines for doing this are coming up fast

You can register for vote for free here:

Register to vote (Deadline 11:59pm 26 November)

Depending on your personal circumstances, you may also want to:

Register for a postal vote (Deadline 5pm 26 Nov in England/Scotland/Wales, 5pm 21 Nov for Northern Ireland)
How to vote via a proxy (Deadline 5pm on 4 December)

Who can vote?

All British, Irish and qualifying Commonwealth citizens who live in the United Kingdom, and 18 or over on 12 December 2019.

If you have two residences (eg, you are a university student), you are allowed to be registered at two different addresses in different constituencies. Might be best to do this in case you don't know where you will be on the day. You are only allowed to vote once though!

You can also vote if you are a British citizen who lives abroad, but has been registered to vote in the last 15 years (though it might be easier to vote by post rather than fly home!)

And don't forget, if you don't feel you want to vote for any of the candidates in your area, by going along and spoiling your ballot, then your vote will still be counted.

Hi all

We started this thread to spread the word that people need to register to vote, as we believe this is something that can affect people's finances, and many people use this site in order to save money. To be clear, there is no implication about who people should vote for - we simply believe as many people should get a say as possible.

We totally appreciate though that even though this is about ensuring you get a vote, this was likely to lead to heated political discussion, and in hindsight we should have locked it from the start. We want to leave the thread live in order to achieve its original aim of spreading the word about voting, but have deleted all comments and locked it from new ones.

Thanks
