Have recently set up my grandma with broadband and she's driving me mental with asking questions about how to do stuff, i live a fair way away and talking her through it usually involves...

Me "click start, then internet'"
Her "it's not there"
Me "it is"
Her "it's not, i swear it's not, i may be old but i'm not daft... oh wait, there it is...."

Am wondering if there's a way i can access her pc from mine and talk to her on the phone at the same time to guide her through things?

I'm running Win7 and she's running XP. Any ideas?

it is...

Only works if you are on the same network...

I used to help people via the interwebs in the past using it, and I see it's there in Windows 7. Whether it works cross-platform, I have no idea.

EDIT: It does, you just need to get your Grandma to create an invitation file. This definitely works over the net, don't know where saayinla got that from.

i use logmein to access my PC from elsewhere, cos then I can still upload webpages to my FTP server without having to install an FTP software on the machine am on, plus I can keep my PC on downloading stuff at home, log in, check how its doing, restart, etc etc

I might give that a try then, would she be able to use the mouse at the same time? if you see what i mean

is she on winxp pro?

you could use remote desktop.

not pro, no

There is so many possibilities to do what you want.
Built in to the Windows: Remot Desktop Connection (works great, create invitation by yourself and set validation to max)
Free software: VNC (great stuff, u can use your favourite browser to connect to remote PC)

SHE does not have to be on XP Pro.

The person THIS END has to be on XP Pro, Vista Business or W7 Pro (anything but Home).

The person the other end can be on ANY version of windows (Home etc).

Then you can use Remote Desktop Connection (part of Windows).

Search in the Windows help for Remote Desktop Connection.

+1 for vnc

you have it the wrong way round. In this case the server (grandma) needs xp pro. The client can be on any version of windows.

but i have just realised that this would be pointless as you wouldnt be able to view whats going on on the server (grandma's) machine.

just get her to download skype.........easiest option:)

Whenever I set a PC up for a friend / family member i install Teamviewer on there, so when i inevitably get a call or question I can just remote in to their PC and show them what I need to do

Edit: It's also free for non-commercial use and dead easy to set up
teamviewer.com/

+1 for logmein here.

you can take control and all she has to do is make sure the ruddy thing is switched on. idiot proof.

Thanks guys, just set up logmein and shown her a few bits.

Was quite impressed with it actually, like you say just make sure she has it on.

Coincidentally that's how i worked out that her printer wasn't working, it was switched off......

Thanks again

+1 for logmein, easiest way to manage all of your connection needs. And if the computer supports power on via network then you can turn the computer on as well!

That would really freak her out!!

Took me ages to reassure her it was me controlling it and she didn't have a 'virus'

god sounds like my in laws and parents and other family members

they always ringing me 'whys my pc doing this'

they think cause i can get it out the box and get them up and running that i know everything, when that could not be further from the truth lol
