    Renault Car Keys

Hi all, a cry for help really.. My son has lost his key for his 1999 Renault clio so now he only has the one key for it - the Renault garage have quoted something in the region of £120 to make another, the key has a microchip in it that controls the immobiliser. My local locksmith says that he can't do it but if we can find a auto locksmith that can cut chipped keys it would only cost about £40 - does anyone know an Auto locksmith in Sussex that can cut Chipped Renault keys?

Renault are renowned for makeing cheap repairs to any other make of car horrendously expensive. The new megan they produce will cost you in the region of 300 quid to, wait for it , change a standard headlight bulb. My best advice would be to ditch the clio asap and get something preferably not french.

What rubbish. A new headlight bulb in the Megane will cost you exactly the same as any other car. To fit in is either a DIY job (not the simplest bulb, not the hardest), a local independent (or Renault speciailst) will charge approximatelely 0.2 hours for the job. At absolute worst, a Renault dealership I believe has it down as a 0.5 hour job (so i.r.o £45 labour), plus the bulb.

Furthermore, nearly all modern cars have very costly keys.

I need a new key for my Citroen Picasso - I thought I had to do it with Citroen, who want £120. The only problem with my key is that the buttons are knackered!

Just saw key fobs on Ebay, so if anyone knows a key programmer in London/Eseex, please let me know

yep agree with pghstochaj (wata name!) that all car keys are over priced and u need loadsa id now right?!

get a normal key cut, it wont work but if you lose the working key you can then use the non microchipped key to get a new chipped key cut

Can't use it to programme anything else, however. The only use of such a key is to gain access to the car, for instance, if you locked your key inside.

Edit: I see your point now, that method would only work with dealers normally, not general locksmiths (as they will clone the old key normally). However, I am pretty sure that Renault would be able to cut the key AND programme it without an old key, based upon the codes for the specific car. I would check that though.

At least you bothered to spell it correctly Thank you.

If people want cars that can not be stolen without the key, they have to pay for the technology. The manufacturers made cars basically impossible to steal without the keys and then on the rare occasion that people lose the key, have a go at the manufacturer for it.

First you have the key, that has a cost, as do the electronics inside, that has to be physically cut and then programmed by a technician, tested and guaranteed. The equipment for the programming is costly, as is the design of the system. Then there's VAT...

Timpsons can do a lot of car keys, but not sure if that is true for the later gen keys.

You can take the transponder out of your knackered unit and place it in the new fob off eBay.

I must admit some are fixed in well but most will come out and allow you to slot in a new fob if you're just replacing the one key.

i know that, but it will allow you to use the spare key now without paying £300 and should you lose the spare key you can then use the standard key to get a microchipped key cut, if you dont lose the spare key you have only payed for a standard key.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!

Yes, it is a pain to change the bulb but it is certainly not £300.

Thanks. I was hoping that I could just transplant my key's insides into a new casing but the one seller I asked on eBay said 'no'

The headlight thing was tested on Fifth Gear the other week. Took an RAC man 45 mins to change, compared to less than a minute in a Golf

Over £50 for a standard bulb change

Around £300 if you have Xenon bulbs, as the bumper has to come off and everything

The RAC man must have never touched a Megane prior to that date, or any other car. Most normal owners with a bit of sense can do it as a DIY job in anything from 2 minutes to 20 minutes. Oh yes, that includes me, 2 sidelight bulbs, one headlight, maybe I should work for the RAC?

Again, the xenon bulb can be done with the bumper off, but it wouldn't be a good story if they told the truth. 5th gear, as they often do, has come under an awful lot of stick for the awful lack of sense they showed in that article.

Regardless, many cars have difficult to change bulbs now, it is a backwards step but part of the steps for making cars safer, more compact for their given internal size and engine capacity and so on.

Finally, guess what sort of difficulty there was on the previous VW Golf? Yes, a similar level of complexity. Again, funny they didn't mention that.

Yeah, you will need to buy a blank blade and fob if you can.
