RENAULT SCENINC AIR CONDITIONING

Typical, car 4yrs old....first day of hols to France, air con stopped working (puff of smoke literally). Coped in temps of 38c, but very noisy with windows open.

Never had a car with air con before, is this going to be costly to fix? Advice appreciated

Puff of smoke suggests possibly a snapped belt and/or new a/c pump.

Euro car parts are pretty cheap for renault stuff

Would've probably been cheaper to have it fixed at a Renault dealer over there, allowing for the "they're british so we'll charge them double" tax that most things over here get dumped with by our Euro cousins!

Have you had it filled at all? I know they were pushing for us to have it filled ours is 3.5 years old.

Car is 3 yrs old, just passesd MOT before the hols.

Had what filled, what needs filling?

The aircon system usually needs filling every 2-3 years. The gas can leak out up to this time, or get used. I didn't know this until I was told with our last car the Ford Galaxy.

At our first MOT on the Scenic we were asked if we wanted to give our cars air con a service too, and also asked if we'd like it filled.... We took our chances and didn't have it done, but I reckon it will be done on the next service.

We had a service before the MOT, they did not mention anything about the air con, do you think it is broke because it was not filled / checked ?

Sounds more like the compressor if you had a puff of smoke. When you turn the a/c on do the revs change at all, can you hear/see the belt drive the compressor?

^^^ like he said - lol

I don't reckon not having it filled would have broken it!

MOT's wouldn;t check this, so it wouldn't have come up on it. Funnily (or not) enough, mine went last week and now needs a new compressor (mine burnt out so I also had the pleasure of a horrible burning electrical smell.

Not surprised, its French

No, what I meant was this should have been covered, or mention on the service. I know the MOT would not cover it/

How often should the air con be checked for levels?

Yes, other cars never go wrong, ever.

Unless there is a problem in the system, it would not fail through natural diffusion in 3 years. Unfortunately it sounds like you have had a more serious failure.

+1. A/C should only ever need checking if it aint't getting cold. My cars Japanese, so it don't make much difference with it being French. I have known a lot of Ford Galaxy's MK 2's with compressor failures. These are basically German, so the originating country of your A/C components is quite irrelevant.

When you turn the A/C on you should hear a click sound and revs drop slightly, if you dont then its either out of gas or compressor is knackered, if you can wait till you get back Kwik Fit charge £45 for a regass , if your A
/C is knackered they will tell you and not charge.

If it is out of gas, refilling it will not solve this problem - the gas will just go again.

Didn't know it was that cheap. Might get this done.

Yes but Kwik Fit will do a pressure check and it should tell them there is a leak if pressure is low.

OK so worth paying them a visit and acting like dumb blond....get diagnosis, then go elsewhere. Had forgot about them. Many thanks.

I know might be expensive but then at least I have the choice, flog it or spend the money and keep it another year!

Oddly...........have not needed A/C since coming home last weekend :w00t:

I remeber a few years ago my A/C went on my Peugeot 306, needed a new piece of pipe, the cost for the pipe was £120 plus labour and regas on top, luckily it was under warranty.
