replacement Wireless ADSL router wanted

Found 30th Dec 2009
I should like to buy a replacement router since my Netgear DG834G seems to have developed an intermittent fault - it is several years old.
Which one would you recommend - it doesn't need to do anything fancy - just keep me connected at all times!
Thanks.

What intermittent fault? I have DG834G and was geting disconnected intermittently but a firmware upgrade did it. It is up and running again. Are you sure your router broke? Worth talking to your ISP and tell them to do a line check. There could be a fault in your tele line too.

try contacting your broadband supplier see if they will send you a new router if not ask for a mac code worked for me before always worth a shot for nothing and you dont have to leave them kurtu bail out before end if they do not play ball

Thanks - I'll do an upgrade and see what happens then. I find it stops working, I unplug it for a few seconds and then it decides to work - usually.

MAC code is for migration. You mean threaten them with leaving if they don't give a free router? I don;t think it works that way.

The latest firmware version is V4.01.40. Log into your router config and check if you are running this version.

I know what a mac code is for hence the reason you would need to ask for one when threatening to leave (just say one of the other providers will give you a new router) also sometimes it will work its look of the draw when you call but always worth a phone call to try get one for free before buying one but maybe thats just me i am exceptionally tight when i want to be

My version is V3.01.38. I have just tried upgrading but don't know where to find the newly downloaded file when I "browse". Please help - sorry to be a pest.

Mine started playing up a while back - I did some Googling and decided on a full factory reset using the reset button (a tiny hole on the back panel). Do the firmware upgrade after the reset and make sure you follow the instructions carefully: Here they are:
Netgear DG834g Reset

Quote from netgear.

Full Reset;

Hold down the reset button on the back using a paper clip, for 30 seconds with the power on.

After 30 seconds, keep the reset pressed in but remove the power lead for 10 seconds.

Then plug the power back in and keep the reset down for another 30 seconds.

So in total the reset is down for 1 minute and 10 seconds

Log into the routers web based configuration page by, launching Internet Explorer and in the address bar type

192.168.0.1

username = admin
password = password

Good luck - it worked a treat for me.

What if you leave after your ISP gives you a new router? What guarantee can you give to your ISP? They might give you a new one if you sign another contract (for a year atleast). Noone will give a free router coz you threaten to leave.

DG834G comes in 5 versions. DG834G V1 to V5. Choose your router from ]here and then go to the firmware download page for your router. You will find all information there and also a link to download the firmware.

surely if the op is looking to buy a router to stay with them then they would be willing to stay with them another 12 months in that case or if you aint happy with them move provides and get a new routes and often quidco etc etc just offering a seperate perspective from yours. Must be a fool me for thinking companies have retention departments for the sake of it..............they must have money to burn
