    researching family history

I have a framed picture that belonged to my great great grandfather. I want to try trace the family that gave it to him, just to say hello etc. But i cant decide what name it is signed in.
Maybe someone knows someone or has one in their family too and can maybe help.
Ive googled and googled but so far i have failed.

    I'd say doel too

Rine (looks like a dot over second letter of first name) Jarus

I have had a look at a few belgian surname sites which seem to suggest that Jansen Jansens, and Janssen are the only 'Belgian surnames anywhere similar to this. However just because they lived there at the time, doesn't mean they are/were Belgian

its rene janis according to my windows magnifier

true. though, i would of thought if they took the trouble to make these 'tokens' that maybe they were actually belgian. its something my mother looked into but never got anywhere. i think this may take more than the combined powers of the hukd community to solve

    will check that out too

It's astounding actually reading about Doel, it's history and it's uncertain future.
    Very sad.

I found this website giving information about the situation there and basically campaigning for its future....

    doel2020.org/cat…=17

They seem to know a lot a bout the area which suggests they may be from Doel / have links to Doel or if not may have information regarding its history. It's difficult to tell for sure as most of the pages, as you'd expect, are predominently Belgian, with limited info in english.
They have a contact us page, with an emai address .....

    doel2020.org/pag…324

Maybe someone there would be able to shed some light on the certificate your Grandfather recieved or have information on the person who presented it to him.

They have a War Memorial there, dedicated to the British troops who they referred to as their Liberators.......

    ww2museums.com/art…htm

As a lot of the houses have been abondoned due to the impending demolition of the town it has apparantly become a ghost town and has become a bit of an attraction for graffitti / street art

    excellent info. thanks.

Forgot to say, as for the name i'd guess at Panis,

I found some geneology websites, one where it seems you can enter a family name and see details of families registered in the country in 1998 (i think)
I tried all of the name suggestions so far and got quite limited hits, that's not to say they dont exist or are in short measure though, but nothing much came up.
Out of curiosity i tried Panis, the first letter doesnt look much like a P but i thought maybe they didnt bring the curve round enough.
It seems to be the most popular name by far, with 1285 hits .......

    familienaam.be/

I may be way off, bit just my two bobs worth, lol

like to thank you again komodo, have had a reply with some great information and offering help to trace the family.

Dear Shane, there is quite a lot of information about the British forces … Dear Shane, there is quite a lot of information about the British forces in Doel at the end of 1944. Doel was liberated in the end of September 1944. Some weeks later than the rest of the region. The Germans kept it as a stronghold so they could cross the Schelde here with a complete division. After the Germans disappeared the British forces defended the city of Antwerp from here with anti-aircraftartillery against attacks with the V1 and V2 weapons. There is also a monument which remembers the period the British forces were here and every year there is a commemoration. I try to get more information about the family who made this certificate. Can you send me a complete photo? Is it a handmade thing. Or is it printed and filled in with the name of your grand grandfather? Where do you live?Greetings,Jan.

How exciting, hope you get the info you need, best of luck

Ahh, but I bet they didn't use the magic of the interwebz lol! From what I found out when looking at the names last night, you should have some luck. There seems to be a very small group of surnames in Belgium, this would obviously get smaller in a place like Doel so you should get lucky, keep this thread updated!!
