just want to say to start with I am going to bed so you wont get much imput until tomorrow but I will post what I can in advance. I just want a complete run through of what to do and be aware dont make assumptions that I know what any potential abbreviations are. I know I can google and suprise suprise I have but even though I have looked through the forums I kind of really want to start with the advice from people here (i must be nuts)

Anyway I have an Inspiron 1525 with vista basic. There is only me that has installed anything onto the laptop and I can asssure you that nothing super dooper has been done so I can safely say I have not 'split the hard drive' (dont know what this means but this is what i'm up against when reading other forums) I THINK I have the discs the laptop came with but not going to get in the loft to check in the box until tomorrow. I really will apreciate your help but please keep it simple.

Like I said I am going to bed but wanted to post so those of you who are in the know and fancy helping me out can post at will. I will check back in tomorrow after work and participate but it will not be til late, Thanks muchly in advance.

P.s dont laugh at my lappy if you think its crappy :-)

ok, one last question do you still have the microsoft sticker on the base of the laptop showing your product key? (doesnt really matter if not as we can get it another way!)

Its still there but a bit worn and there are 2 digits I cant work out

Go here - pcsupport.about.com/gi/…er/

Download and install the free one from the table, that will give you your product key so remember to write it down! (you may not even need it when we reinstall windows but good to have it just in case!)

no, its not even the same length

ok thats strange! First time ive ever come across that! When i restored my dell inspiron 1750 with the discs from dell i didnt even need the product key but i wouldnt want to risk it with yours as i cant say 100% that you wont.
Basically the process would be -
1. Restart the laptop and repeatedly press F2 when its starting up to enter setup.
2. Change the "boot order" so that your cd drive is first. Exit and save changes.
3. Restart the laptop again with the operating system disc in the drive. Press any key to enter the CD when "Press any key to boot from CD is displayed on screen"
4. Follow the instructions on screen during the setup.
5. Once windows is fully reinstalled and your at the desktop you can then insert each of the other discs one by one starting with the drivers and utilites disc to reinstall the programs and drivers.

the one on the bottom of lap is 15 digits long and the cd key from yr download is 25 and none of them correspond

25 makes sense as it should be 25 and split into blocks of 5

ok so why havn't i got the same on my label?

Original Poster

that link isn't working for me dh

google "windows vista COA" and see if it looks like any of them

Original Poster

ah i see whats happened, its over 2 rows and the first one has rubbed off on mine but even so they still dont match

I dont really know what to suggest then. Personally i would just do it as im pretty sure you dont need the product key but im obviously not suggesting you do as id get the blame! lol
Out of interest is the windows disc you have a dell one or an actual microsoft one?

Original Poster

its a microsoft disc, says works9, licensed only for distribution with a new pc. Has sticker on the back of the envelope case thingy with a tracking id on it, that says both ms and dell

Then im pretty sure you wont need the product key but im not suggesting you try it! Think ive stopped being helpful now lol, perhaps someone else can shed some light on the situation?

whats the worst that can happen dh? and you have been really helpfull dont be daft, I really appreciate your time

Hope I am not interrupting but I thought I would mention that I set my acer laptop with vista home premuim back to factory sttings a couple weeks ago and it didnt ask for the vista registration key and I didnt use my backup discs either just followed the on screen instructions and the process was very straightforward.

But one of the main reasons for me making a comment is that installing the updates for vista was a nightmare and seemed to go on forever it took the best part of three days along with everything else like office and anti-virus software however I got there in the end and it was well worth the effort.

Either you will be stuck in the setup or you would be able to finish setup and then have a period of 30 days in which to activate it with a valid product key

so no laptop in effect?

Basically yes, you would then need to buy a new copy of an operating system. Hence why im reluctant to say do it!

You will NOT be able to proceed if it asks for the registration key and you dont have it.

My registration key is on the bottom of my laptop on a label with a barcode so have another look underneath your laptop also have a look for any user manuals or paperwork that came with your laptop when you bought it.

Thanks everso much for all yr time, *virtual rep added*

the sticker is worn, hence not having the key
