Returning an Ebay item

Quick q - I made an ebay purchase for an item described as 'not having a mark on it', it's arrived and is marked & scratched, clearly showing signs of wear: So it's been misdescribed. I've arranged a return with the seller after sending pics as proof, but the seller doesn't want to refund either the dispatch or return postage costs, which will be about £20 total. My understanding is that as the fault is on their part, they should do this?

I'm pretty certain i'm right but just wondered if anyone knows the eBay rules? TIA

even if you claimed thru paypal youd be responsible for the postage costs to return it unfortunatly no way of getting round it!

it is up to you to return, but if you put in a paypal dispute i think they refund all you paid, obvioulsy not retrun postage but the full amount paid in auction

Thanks so the only way round it is to say I'd have to neg feedback them. Bit cheeky, after all it's not my mistake, but the sellers!

Easiest thing to do it start a dispute through paypal, they ALWAYS take the buyers side no matter what. They will give you a full refund and you are totally covered. Only down side is that it might take 1-2 weeks for you to get your money back.

I personally would never send a item back to a seller who has been dishonest in the first place and take his word that he will give a refund.. Better to be safe and start a dispute!

If you open a SNAD dispute you will be refunded full purchase costs … If you open a SNAD dispute you will be refunded full purchase costs including p&p, you will have to pay return p&p though, sorry.

I've not had to open a dispute before (in 450 transactions), how does the return procedure work if I return something? Will I have to provide courier tracking in the same way I would have to for a sale before Paypal/eBay would refund?

Try calling ebay, apparently their new phone support thing is very good

Does that mean you'd keep the item and expect a refund!

Thanks for the advise, the seller is being co-operative, but disagrees about the condition of the item (despite the pics and the listing description) - they've agreed a refund as 'a gesture of goodwill'.

Thanks for the advise - PP keep supplying me with the phone number too.

you have to neg them or else whats the point of it. even if they do refund postage they are just going to sell it again and hope they get away with it!

Fair point. The Ebay phoneline was useless, they just kept telling me I should try and resolve the issue directly with the seller.

My concern is that the seller has said they will 'discuss the issue of refund once it's been received' back and they agree it's in the condition sent. Obviously I'm not setting for that, I'd want a 'I'm sorry you've proved the condition isn't as the listing states, apologies full refund on receipt'. From the tone i think they're going to refund less fees and initial postage.

They've perfect feedback to date and are being assertive rather than rude about the sale, but they're not exactly re-assuring me.

Thanks for the advise
