I just bought a sound system from Comet but I just found out when connecting it all up that it doesn't have optical input which I need.

What's the chances of returning this and buying a newer model?

I bought this instore.

Umm, slim really. Depends what your comet returns manager is like. They are usually very very strict. You need to find some sort of loophole first I would say before going in there.

Something like, I asked the salesman if it had optical, he said yes, and it diddnt. Thats the best thing. Cos then its missold. Which is a get out! - Dotn worry about giving the salesman a hard time.

if you return an unwanted item there is a 10% fee, but it has to be unopened so if you can make it look like that then you'll just have to cut your losses, unless you wanna purposefully damage it, but thats a gamble.

Hmm I could tell them that it has an intermittent problem. If I tell them the system will intermittently lose sound on one speaker and I think its faulty, will they refund?

yeah should do.

then go order it online through quidco and go pick your newer model up from a different branch.

Better still - replace it with a blown fuse......

I would be weary of this. I bought 2 acer laptops, both with intermittent problems, and they sat there for hours trying to seeit happen. in the end I had to break the ram so they could see a problem. No way was I having faulty laptop for business.

Thanks guys. I just called them up and basically told the truth which was I was misadvised by the advisor.

He told me that I can get sound out from 5 speakers when I connect my Sky box to it but when I bought it and set it all up, this wasnt the case. Sound would only come out the 2 speakers.

and what was the outcome?

They said they should be able to refund me but i will have to box it all up and bring it into the store. I hope to god I dont go through all this trouble only for them to turn me down when I get there.

I think its fair to have to box it up lol.

They wil prob act like they have never spoken to you before in ur life when you get to store, I would ring up again and tell them to put you through to the store if you havemt already spoken to them. Cos comet will not take a call to customer services as fact. So make sure you cover this.

if they refuse a refund. ask for compo for fuel.

U would be surprised how much fuel compensation these big boys pay out. In my store I used to work in, at least a tenner for out of pocket customer expenses.

i'd be a little worried. Comet, Currys PCWorld etc can be bar-stewards when it comes to getting a refund/replacement.

Maybe the refund policy / procedure is so hard because there are so many bogus broken items being taken back. When do you accept responsibility for your own mistakes? Why didn't you check that the product was fit for your purpose? Will an unsuspecting customer now get the product that you have part used?

but when the staff will say anything just to get a sale, its ot surprising they get items taken back

I am in no way defending the likes of Currys or Comet; I have had so many run-ins with that lot I now only buy large items (over £100) with a credit card so that the card company then have equal liability.

You are right here with what you are saying.

I dont at all agree with people buying things from the big dept stores just to try before they buy. thats not what returns are about. Too many people think they have a 30 day cooling off period by law, and they are very mistaken. Too many people also think they can have a refund if they want, they are also mistaken.

However, genuine mistakes like this one warrant a replacement at least, if not a refund. Comet / currys / pc world etc have contracts with the manufacturers so that if there are faulty items, they are to be replaced without hassle, most things are just reconditioned and sold on, so its no biggy. The stores can refund or exchange if they want, its just the attitude of some staff members you have to deal with. Be nice, dont shout, and you will get your way.

Also, alot of people think the massive companys can afford to do it, but when you think there is between 5 and 10 % margin in most products (except cables etc) , there isnt alot in it.

EDIT, little tip here.

If you buy a laptop or a pc from one of the big stores, as long as you dont take the michael with the time period, but take it back after a few weeks, advise that you bought as a gift and when you turned it on, you did not accept the EULA, you are entitled to a full refund!
