Returning Sale Items

I'm thinking of ordering a new coat from Debenhams but depending on fit, sometimes I need small, and sometimes medium.

If I buy both sizes, can I return the one that doesn't fit? I know you can normally, but I've also heard some retailers don't refund sale items.

I've checked the returns policy, and it doesn't seem to mention anything about sale items being excluded, but just want someone who can confirm this.

Thanks and merry christmas!

I was under the impression that sale items are covered by the same statutory rights as non sale items unless the item is on sale for a specific reason that the retailer has explicitly stated. For example a coat that maybe has defective stitching would not normally be covered under your statutory rights provided the retailer has stated the reason.

If the only reason the item is on sale is the drop in price then legally you can return the item, however be aware that the retailer is not legally obliged to refund you in cash, they can insist on issuing you with a credit note.

Forgot to add that the retailer is also no obliged to pay for the postage costs, including delivery cost to get the item to you and also the cost for you to return the item. You should read the terms and conditions and their return policy. If its not clear then email them, call them or go in store. It may be worth it even if just to give you peace of mind before ordering.

Cheers for the tip! It says that clothing can be returned to the store though, and hopefully posting a coat second class standard shouldn't cost much either. Guess it's the bigger items you have to look out for.
