Once you get your site tens / hundreds of thousands for hosting advertising marketing and truly making it scalable to cope

To set up something like Zoopla, or Right move with similar scale and functionality, plus advertising marketing, sales, support, billing, accounts, HR etc, you'd need backing of at least c£5M to to kick it off.

This article will give you an idea of scale. One of the above spends £20M on marketing alone every year. its not just setting up a website, otherwise anyone could do it.

You should be able to buy the "site" alone for circa £100k now the template has been written. That is of course dependent on who owns the development & IT rights. If its rightmove or zoopla that owns it then the OP would indeed have to pay hundreds of thousands/millions to get it developed elsewhere.

Quite right, however I would multiply your initial costs by 1Ox. Its Millions to setup and run PA. One of the above companies spends £20,000,000 on marketing alone each year!

The OP is talking about the "website" not the running costs of a business.

    My pleasure.

Here is one on the infrastructure that keeps the Rightmove website up. Think of the website as the reception of a large office and factory block full of people, processes, equipment, tools and filing cabinets.

Folks think a website is a page on a server, for some that display info with only a few hits a minute it could be stored on your home PC. However as you as you start adding more, such as transactions, searches and multiple databases to support it, the costs go through the roof.
Good luck with what you decide to do. Don't let this put you off. Research all the info first. Often you can just sell an idea!
