Rio 2016 Olympic Opening Ceremony comment thread

So am watching the ceremony which is currently half way through the 206 members entering the Maracana, presuming the celebration part has finished and now ready to kick off the Olympics proper. What did you guys think of the 50 minute presentation?

Personally I loved the giant screen floor which made some cool effects. The fire sparklers I enjoyed despite being brief, and the fireworks were great. However the rest I thought was crap also considering the lower budget compared to London

Haven't seen it but whatever it was like it must have been 100 times better than our 2012 ceremony.

All I remember is seeing mounds of grass & I was just awaiting the appearance of the Teletubbies.

The London 2012 ceremony was awesome.... This? Meh.

Bicycles, too many bicycles! :O

Did you watch it all? The 2012 ceremony was incredible. Rio one was good for the first 5 minutes then was just boring.

Well Beijing cost 57 million London about half that
this one was supposed to be 2 million

Tokyo ?

Olympics? Is it on again all ready?

Did the President parachute into the arena? No? Then it couldn't have been better than 2012!

B&M

The projection effects were pretty impressive, it would have been dire without them.

I think I fell asleep during letter C of the procession... are they still going?

I was falling asleep until Gisele came one... managed to stay awake 2 more minutes

I'm watching it now & I'm a bit disappointed that it is lacking the Brazilian carnival vibe. Also up to now it isn't a patch on London x

As a show it was less impressive than 2012 but considering it cost 1/12th of London it represents common sense but it like all ceremonies was too official and less passionate and lacked the Rio vibe
Anyway for me it's about the athletes so let's see if there are any upsets and records broken

Not sure to be honest how the mathematics would work

I think they weren't helped by the lack of information provided by the TV coverage and lack of time gaps shown to the riders, comparing to what is usually available on the Tour de France.

He's not a brummie though so no idea how you can say he's the pride of Birmingham. Much closer to Stoke, derby, nottingham etc etc....

Come on GB in the gymnastics team final!!!!!

Tom Dalley and Goodfellow Bronze in the Diving, and Ed Ling Bronze in the Shooting Trap!

i'm surprised tom and his partner were celebrating so effusively - shouldn't they have been angry and disappointed at missing out on the gold?

and why are tennis and golf in the olympics - pretty ridiculous IMO.

anyway i'll be cheering on leila, liina and lily in the female marathon - i envisage them crossing the line hand in hand; the world's first-ever sub-hour finishing time!

MEET the gorgeous identical triplets who are all going for gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic marathon.

Leila, Liina and Lily Luik (try saying that fast!), who hail from Tartu, Estonia, are set to make history as they become the first triplets to compete against each other in the Games’ 120-year history...

Damn David Florence forced to paddle up to an early gate on the Canoe C1 final, another GB medal chance gone. Looks like GB athletes mostly coming up short so far this Olympics.
