R.I.P

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, *Common Sense*, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isnt always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (dont spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldnt defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
Im A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Excellent....and so true....

lol, that reads so much like a eulogy I felt quite sad xxxxx

Common sense, whatever we understand that to mean, is the result of the process of socialisation - the process whereby (primarily) newer members of society (infants and immigrants etc) learn the norms and values of their respective society. The key agents of socialisation are the family, education system, religion, media and peer groups.

The common sense values and norms of a particular society of a particular period will always be different from others because the process never quite ends as common sense values and norms tend to vary somewhat over time and from one culture to the next.

So it's not that common sense has died as you suggest, but rather, is simply changing. And it's a good thing too otherwise we would all lament the fact the women won the right to vote and slavery was abolished etc.

LMAO :thumbsup: ... ahh damn I think a little bit of wee slipped out

I'm afraid that one went right over my head. Can you tell what you mean?

So true OP.

Common sense has died mostly. We don't leave our children to think for themselves these days, instead we fear more and protect them - wrapping them in cotton wool. Many of our children don't learn to make mistakes or take a fall.

I also believe in bringing back discipline in schools with the ruler. Give teachers more power! And parents for that matter.

Most kids response to anything these days - What are you looking at or what are you going to do about it - you can't touch me!

Ah well, this old ode again, at least you're not claiming its from the 'London Times' this time :giggle:

Isn't it 'common sense' to question things people say? I love how the OP is full of unsubstantiated generalisations.

To measure what exactly?

Unless you mean actually striking children with the ruler? Bit extreme.

wtf! more tosh, common sense is as simple as wearing oven gloves when removing a tray of roast potatoes from the oven, nothing more, nothing less.

I tend to use a tea towel rolled up when I remove hot trays from the oven.

I hope that doesn't mean common sense is dead.

Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen.

You do realize that I'm not the author of this, I just posted it on here to raise a smile on a few faces and because I agree with it unsubstantiated generalisations aswell(you'll probably find that most off the examples have came from America, If you want I could check the net for the articles if that would make you happy or were you just having a rant??)

As for it being common sense to question what people say??? Not really.

"Don't touch that its hot"
"Why is it hot?"
"Because its fire"

Common sense is having the knowledge to not need to question what someone says.

sadly those days are long gone as the PC world is with us for good

my mate got slated down the pub recently by a couple of women for him letting his 11 year old go play in the park with her mate

their 4 kids are in care! :w00t:

they got a right good slagging off and someone even said they were gonna report them now (they both claim housing benefit etc as they say the kids still live with them even though they were taken away 10+ years ago!).
