Scroll down to the bottom for the BTU calculator, this should give the output you need for your room.

You have to turn the heating on or it doesn't matter what size the radiator is!

thank you willhollin i will measuer up tomorrow and go from there, my heating has been on all day and the house never seems to get any warmer, i have double glazing, someone has been out and checked and said i have cavity wall insualtion, my attic has been insulated up to what was needed and yet the house is still cold, the walls in my home are really cold yet they still say i have cavity wall insulation

You sure all the walls are cold, and not just a cold spot?
We have a cold spot above and below the where the elctric box is on the outside of the house. I am trying to get a local company out to seal from the ground up to the electric box, and from the elctric box to the roof. I reckon it's only about 2 ft wide, but hell, the draught comes out between the floor and the skirting in the upstairs bedroom, but it's hard getting a company out to do so little! And who knows, maybe that draught is venting into the living room, providing oxygen, since our chimney is sealed up.

Well dont touch the walls then you wont know they are cold!

Maybe an idea not to walk round the house naked all day!

no, they are ice cold. all of the outside walls, mind the inside walls aint much better, when the bloke came out to chek i had cavity wall insualtion he just said some houses are like that, very helpful:roll:

I am fed up with every winter having horrendous fuel bills and a cold house, i dont mind having horrendous fual bills and a warm house

Well do what my friend sarah used to do when she was a student. She had this ****** sofa that she put an electric blanket on then a fleece cover on it then sat under a kingsize duvet. Was nice and worm. The house was freezing but used to sit under that and watch a film it was great.

    This may help.

If your thinking about replacing all your radiators you may be better off having a new heating system. They are about £2,000 for a condensing combi boiler and 8 radiators and the companies round our way are doing 12 month interest free credit. So it may end up being better value as you might save upto £50 a month on gas depending on how old your current system is.

if i move my house to where you are maybe, but not here, quote from BG gor new boiler and 1 new rad was nearly £5000, even if it was £2000 i cannot afford to replace something that isnt broke, if you get my drift, but am wondering if the lounge and the dining room radiator is big enough

Well how big is your room? How big(long) is your current radiator? Can a longer radiator fit in the space? What time of boiler do you have?

Well you said it was serious! Well update the thread tomorrow when you know. Well if you dont want a bigger radiator and a new boiler is out of the question even though the one you have will only be about 50% efficient and the new condensing combi ones are about 95%. So you only option is to replace your single convector radiator with a double convector radiator. A 1.4mtr one is £71 from wickes.

it is already a double one, will find out some measurements and try and find out the boiler i have, does each boiler only allow a certain amount of rads then? like you cant keep adding to it?

Yes boilers only have a total output. The bigger the radiator capacity you have the harder it has to work. Backboilers are not effisiante and if your is old probably even less so. You can't buy them now so if it goes you will have to get a new one which sounds bad but the savings in just a few year can pay for its self. Just think at the moment for every £1 you pay on your gas bill 50p goes down the drain. Now think if your gas bill was half what it is now a month how many months would it take to pay off the costs. Forget BG they think there are British airways but they are more easyjet with British airways prices.

it is only 8 years old, had a new system put in just over 8 years ago and everything works fine, but i think they must have put smaller rads on or something cause thy still get red hot just the house never seems to warm up, and at this present time cannot afford to replace, so looking at all options that may help till im in a better postition to fund something so big

Well if it copes fine with heating what you have got then putting in bigger radiators is the way to go. When you do replace it they do a foil sheet for behind the radiator to reflect some heat back to stop it soaking into the wall. You might want to look at something like this.

I phone the energy advice line and they just say well some houses are like that, quite helpful really, i must phone them back now the cavity bloke has been out and said it is definatley been done as the energy line reckoned it was because it wasnt insulated that the walls are so cold, sometimes i just get to the stage where i feel i am banging my head against a brick wall
