Anyone else think there should be a private sector type company offering competition to this lot? They seem to have some sort of halo round them letting them do whatever they like. Or is there competition out there already?

They run at a loss as it is, so wouldn't really be good business sense to try and rival them..... no one would be able to compete on price.

Some businesses use DX mail (who operate independantly to RM) but companies like DHL/TNT sometime 'dip-in' to the RM service to help with their deliveries.

didnt realise that, surely someone could compete?

ie better service, slightly more expensive?

It wouldn't work - not in this climate... for a start the infrastructure just doesn't exist outside of RM...

Would you pay more though? I'm happy paying 39p to send a letter from one end of the country to the other (even if it does take some time occasionally)

I think the royaml mail should be sold to the private sector as was British Gas. (with caps on how much they can charge for parcels etc). Taxpayers money is going to waste; the british public pays for this service to run and i dont see any government payouts as compensation. etc.

It's been mooted for some time but the climate isn;t right...

If Royal mail was sold off many of the services would disappear ,postage costs would be higher and customer services would be a call centre in India,

there already is competition the problem is all the competition send through royal mail as its too expensive to set up a network as a business the main problem is the ceo of royal mail is also on the board of there rivals meaning when competition was introduced rather than saying we should be able to charge courier firms same as public he was negotiating a deal for dsa which means where we have to pay 50 p for a large letter he only has to pay 13 p he even changed the name from flats to large letter they dont want to sell of royal mail they want to sell of the profitable business section so in the long run it will cost taxpayers more to sustain it not only that public will eventually have to pay over 6 pounds to send a letter and well end up with one delivery a week instead of one a day

true say.

I can't see any problems with how the Royal Mail works - other that the Strike issues. I ALWAYS get my post on time and really quickly....................................

No, I think the government should throw their weight behind the Post Office and Royal Mail - it is not a business, it is a public service, and should be treated as such.

The reason that the energy and transport sectors are in such a mess is because they were put into private hands. These services should be funded, co-ordinated and run centrally for the public good, not to make profits for directors and share holders.

too many companies have threatened to jump if this goes ahead.

royal mail *WILL* back down... dont worry!

but then prices would go up massively. Its no good putting caps on prices if you are selling RM as no one will buy a company that can't make money.

The trouble with allowing competition in industries such as this is that only the most lucrative and profit making sectors are taken up.
Moving post within and between cities can be done quite efficiently and at a profit, however letter and parcel post between individuals across the country can only be cost effective if the infrastructure is in place. Every time postal business goes to a competitor it puts up the effective cost of this infrastructure.

However, the red postal service and its employees must face reality, they are largely doing unskilled/semiskilled work and so, must expect to work hard for their money, have little influence over how the business is run and expect renumeration at the lower end of the scale. Just like farm hands, shop staff and many other honest dedicated workers in this country.

The management needs a good shake up too, and the unions need to act responsibly and remember that short term gains are counterproductive and potentially worthless if you have a failing business. Remember scargill?

Well the government should only sell off parts of the company to private sector allow them to make a profit but then the government would still be able to control the prices.

Trade unions aren't 'communist'. Would you rather have tyrannical businesses who treat workers like rubbish?

I suppose they could make the doors smaller in offices because the workers have no problem being bent over:roll:

well, i'll admit i know no-one except a few of those 'fairly' high-up in the decision making process of a 3rd party private company and are simply thinking ('several' companies-wide) of lumping royal-mail and going out on their own. this mornings decision (or indecision!) may tip a good few FTSE-100 companies into dumping royal mail completely and going to private mail service. Thank-you (in german?)
