Royal Mail Postage Online query

If I create a postage label online and pay for it will it provide a tracking number (if paying for that service)?

I know I have to take it to my local Post Office drop off point but do the staff have to scan anything whilst I'm there and provide me with a tracking number or is it provided to me once I pay postage online?

It does provide a tracking number - however some staff can be a bit inept and will try and give you another one... just make sure you tell them they don't need to!

Thanks for the reply. The whole point of me doing this is so I don't have to queue and can just drop a load of parcels off.

If I've got to queue to simply tell them this then I might as well pay for it all there.

They do have a drop and go service - you load your money onto a prepaid card, package everything up but don't put postage on it. Fill in a manifest with details of each item and how you want it sent, then literally drop it all off at the counter, with the prepaid card. They'll process it that day, you can then pick up your proof of posting and your card later, at your convenience.

You'll need to queue if you're sending it via a trackable method as you need a receipt to prove it's been posted.

Ah I don't think Id want to risk that. No doubt I'd leave all my parcels and something wouldn't get scanned, etc

You'll get tracking numbers still, and they update your manifest with all the details for you. It has to be manually checked so they can't miss anything. I've used it several times without issue - really convenient.

The tracking number wouldn't be activated in their system unless it's processed at the counter is what one of them told me a while back. It also means you have no proof of posting if it goes astray as the only proof they will accept is a receipt from a PO counter

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I'm going to risk it - I'm don't trust the Staff to take the parcels and process them.
I'd rather watch them do it in front of me.

Good point, I was looking at it from my point of view which is where I've paid for the postage already and have preprinted everything. The drop and go idea would work

It might be slightly different, but I just paid online for an eBay parcel I was sending (direct through eBay) and the .pdf "label" that was generated already had the tracking number detailed on it straight after I paid for it.

My wife just handed it into the PO this morning and never got anything back so I assume that's the tracking number that will be used.
