Running an Ethernet cable through the floor
I'm trying to run an Ethernet cable from downstairs to my room which is on the second floor and was wondering if it is safe to do so. Will there be any pipes underneath my floor which I could possibly drill into. If anyone has any experience with this, I would really appreciate your input. Thanks.
Like mentioned above, lift the board you are considering drilling through so you can see exactly what you can and can't achieve by drilling.
The problem is, I don't have floorboards. It's like 1 thick piece of wood that covers my whole floor under my carpet.
Some people love creating faff for a very simple job.
but then won't my window have to stay open all the time?
Second this you can then conect in any room throughout building without ripping building apart
Nope... there should be a rubber gasket/thing around all modern upvc that would accomodate such a flat cable. Like othere have said a powerline adaptor would be your best bet unless your electical wiring is very old. Also the flat ethernet cable is excellent at burying underneath carpets, alongside skiring boards/up the stairs and then into the room you want it.
Doing this enabled me to drop virgin every other year and get a good deal on adsl and vice versa.
Dont drill....
Dont feed outside.
Dont mess with floorboards.
Get it fed under the carpets but get both sets of wires there from the start and u will have no issues.
Not that new now. We're now switching to a low frequency doppler wifi that has twice the signal penetration with no bandwidth reduction.
I cannot understand why anyone would suggest anything else tbh.
Depends on the powerlines, I've got 40mb and it runs 40mb solid where ever my homeplugs are, Nearly as good as a direct connection.
Probably a trade off at a certain point but I think they're a good solution.
Is yours 500mbps?
Plus, the majority of powerline adapters will go no faster than 100Mbps (due to their ethernet connection speed) even though they say their rated at 500Mbps!
The options you have are as follows:
1. Powerline adapters (Gigabit rated are best, but still not the fastest method. Neat and tidy)
2. Wifi version AC. If you spend a decent amount it can go faster than hard wired and a neat solution, but is expensive to get best quality.
3. Hardwired through walls and floors (Gigabit connection, low cost, good speed but messy)
4. Flat Ethernet cable, run under carpets/along skirting (good speed, low cost, relatively tidy)
I went for option 4 - a flat ethernet cable running underneath the carpets and staple-gunned to skirting where there was no carpet. Its a very fast option, cheap and neat if done properly. And there are no holes to drill, just make sure you get a cable long enough
Not sure, think so.
Yes...at best you'll get about 50% of the speed of Cat5e/Cat6 for internal LAN traffic....
