    S-l-o-w broadband

Really tired of my slow broadband. It's not anything to do with my house or equipment, simply we live in a street with old telegraph poles, copper cables and I guess a high local population. I'm with Plusnet and have a BT line only around a mile or less from the exchange. I have an 8 meg line but at most I only see around 3 or 4 meg download.

Plusnet throttle their lines of course, and BT are only estimating me 6 meg when they roll out ADSL2 next year, and in the evenings their must just be everybody downloading everything. It has just taken around 20 seconds to get less than a meg from HP, and a 280mb download from Blackberry was a trickle so i cancelled. Streamed video times out. In the morning it will zip along, not brilliantly, but pretty fast which confirms the contention ratios at BT and throttling at Plusnet.

Is there a solution besides moving house? Does moving to an ISP with LLU help? Does having a cable service instead of BT improve things? This is worse than dial up several years ago in the evenings.

We also have old telegraph poles, but I am probably 600m or less from the main city exchange.
I only pay for an 8 meg line but last weekend it seemed noticeably faster. I checked my connection at Speedtest.net and I'm now getting 16.4mb/s

    Very pleased with Virgin

...so you are on cable, not using the BT lines?

I was having the same problems with plusnet and on switching to O2 broadband it was a breath of fresh air, turned out nothing to do with my lines.
Although plusnet tried to say it was, went from 2mb to 8mb with O2.

Virgin also do ADSL via BT wires.

Indeed, it's just a bog standard BT line. There's no cable access in my area.
I was getting just 3 or 4mb earlier this year so it's a drastic improvement.

I can only sympathise with you, we too have difficulty with our broadband speed even though we probably pay the same amount per month. Mind you I did hit 500kb once during the early hours.

Go do an online scan somewhere like Trend micro and you'll probably find you've a load of tracking cookies and stuff using up your bandwidth.

Thanks, but its physically the wiring in the street (i.e. BT say max is around 4Mb anyway) and during off peak hours and Plusnets 'non-throttling' hours, it's ok.

Virgin upgraded our internet too a couple of months back for free - from 2Mb to 20Mb. Now almost compares to when I was with UKOnline (who I wouldn't recommend btw, but that's a story for another topic).

really? what was with your problem with ukonline?
i've been with them for a year and a half and about to enter another 12 month contract with them (house move), have always thought it was an excellent service.
