Sainsburys pretax profits up to £671m ($1bn) - Consumer Power Needed!

    Banned
    Which is nice.

They rose 17.5% on the previous year.

Consumers should remember this when the VAT increase comes and the items/goods applicable for VAT creep up (please note the majority of 'essential' supermarket produce is zero rated anyway)

There is room for the top supermarkets to NOT pass on the VAT to consumers who are facing an upward struggle for the foreseeable future.

Yes, this goes against all my capitalist ideologies but this needs to happen.

    spammed,use the VAT … spammed,use the VAT threadhttp://www.hotukdeals.com/item/676461/vat-rise-coming

You mean use the thread that disappeared up it's own behind? I don't think there is a mention of VAT in that last 24 pages of that thread.

This thread is about consumer power, not necessarily VAT

Consumer power is actually tomorrows news - something we all have to get involved in to save the pennies.

Unfortunately, I feel that is going to go in one direction.
HOWEVER - I do like the idea of supermarkets offering incentives to buy produce and then get discounted petrol prices. I think Sainsburys offered something similar a few days ago?

The tax they pay is fantastically huge I agree - but pretax of $1 billion doesn't warrant passing on an increase of 2.5% when the VAT rise comes.

We are all in this together - that includes the big guys. It will make no sense for the consumer to be more and more out of pocket whilst the big supermarkets post greater and greater profits.

so would you prefer if the company was 2.5% less productive instead?

that 2.5% still goes back into the economy. maybe the consumer should become more efficient rather than even less.

:-D Trust me, the consumer will be forced to become more efficient in the coming months.
Hey, I feel like I'm a lefty arguing a case against capitalism - that really isn't my stance on this (the exact opposite is true to be fair).
However, productivity doesn't come into it. Consumers don't spend when prices are high; consumers do spend when prices are low. That is economical sense and something Tesco and Asda base their whole business model around.

For these big supermarkets to not pass the VAT increase on to the consumer would not make a dent in their profits - the consumer however would be better off.

Have to agree on this. One of the supermarkets will make a big deal about absorbing the VAT increase. Others will follow. This is because:

    1. They could afford to anyway
    2. They can easily recoup the cost without anyone really realising. They control the markets and either squeeze the suppliers or increase product prices anyway over a period of time.

However we need to make sure this isn't going to directly effect the producer.
It is impossible, and would not be ethical, for government to legislate in a way that forces supermarkets to act kindly in the next few years.

That is why it should be left to the consumer to talk with our feet.
